Knife suggestions for my wife

The only two knives I ever got my wife to carry was a Victorinox classic and an Opinel number 8 that had hearts all over it. She loves the classic, and when TSA took one from her when she flew out to California, she bought another one soon as she passed a big box store. Checked it in her luggage on the trip back. She keeps it on her keyring with her little flashlight and whistle. I think the scissors and nail file does it for her.

I once gave her a number 8 Opinel for Valentines day as a sort of gag, but she plopped it in her purse and it's been there ever since. Loves it.

My wife is not a knife person either. I got myself a SAK compact (in addition to 4 others), she saw it, examined it, and....well, I had to get myself another one.

I would second the Rat 2 its fairly inexspensive but still good quality for her to try and see if she enjoys carrying it and its a useful tool for her before dropping more on a mini grip or a native 5. The SAK is a decent option and not too exspensive for a starter also but many women hate slip joints because of having to use fingernails to open them. Just my personal experience and opinion.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

I think your wife would be happy with either the Kershaw Shuffle, Skyline or Nura 3.0 :D

Hi all. In the near future I'd like to get a knife for my wife. I suspect that this may be a somewhat difficult purchase since my wife is not a "knife" person for the most part. She appreciates good cutlery in the kitchen (she's got a few Wustof knives that we both like very much), but aside from that, she couldn't be bothered. That said, I'd like to get her something just to keep in her purse for those times when it may come in handy. I'v got a few criteria in mind, but in addition to gathering specific knife suggestions, I also want to hear about other criteria that people may think may be worth considering.

I want something that's sized just right for comfortable, safe use in a woman's hand without being too big or too small to handle properly, and something that has a tasteful, non-threatening appearance. If this thing looks like something a criminal or Rambo would carry, my wife will hate it before she even gives it a try.

Right now I'm thinking about a SAK, maybe the Executive, since it's a reasonable size, and has some of the tools that I think would be most useful to her, namely the scissors and nail file. This also passes the "non-threatening" test. My one concern is that it doesn't have a lock blade, but I doubt she'd ever wind up cutting something that would really benefit from the lock blade.

Does anybody else have any suggestions?

A Victorinox is a good choice. An alox Pioneer is a great looking knife and very useful.

I have bought my wife three knives over the years. She carries all of them still, which one depends on what she's doing that day. Kershaw Leek, Spyderco Native, and Case Trapper Equestrian.

I am a big Victorinox fan, she is not crazy about them.

I'm not a "purse" person and my wife don't go to purse forums to solicit suggestions of which purse would suit me best. See the logic here?

My wife's reasoning for not wanting anything I presented or anything I carry myself is that if, god forbid something like an attack or attempted rape situation happened to her she wouldn't want the attacker to take a knife from her and use it against her. As a 6' 200lb 29 year old male in relatively good shape I don't worry about that too much. As a 5'5" 100lb 29 year old female I see where she is coming from.

I totally disagree. That should be the last thing on her mind. If the attack happens the person is either already going to have a weapon or simply be large enough to beat her down. Having a knife for potential self defense is never a bad idea. Use it only when you absolutely have to have it to fend someone off and 95 percent of the time it will work. A few slashes will change the attackers attitude. Getting into a knife fight when it could be avoided is when knuckleheads get into big trouble. Begging and pleading to leave you alone is when a knife, can make a better impression enforcing your pleas to be left alone, hopefully saving your life.

A knife self defense class would do wonders improving her confidence as well as teaching her how to keep the attacker from getting the knife from her.

I'm a woman. My first knife was the kershaw scallion. I love it and still have it. I bought one for another female friend and she carries it every day. It's small, unobtrusive, fun to flip open, and has sleek lines. It mostly got used for opening boxes.

If your wife felt that perhaps you could benefit from the use of a purse, but didn't know what type of purse would best suit a person who isn't a purse person, I suspect that perhaps it would be beneficial for her to go to purse forums to solicit suggestions.

I just want to pick up a useful tool for my wife, and rather than make idiotic assumptions about what might suit her type of usage best, I'm polling the audience in hopes of making a better informed purchase than I could have done on my own. I don't see the harm in that.

Anyway, for all of you who have provided suggestions, I appreciate it. It's giving me some ideas. Right now I'm still leaning toward the SAK route, but I'm also trying to consider what tasks the tool would most likely be used for, and whether the SAK is really more capable than a single sharp blade for most of the types of situations that it may be used for.

Vic Cadet or Spyderco Dragonfly 2 perhaps in the purple sprint run that's currently available.

I'm telling you man, that Rat 2 tends to fit most women's hands perfectly, and it's very easy to use, and very ergonomic. It's a simple, sleek, locking folder with a single blade. It has thumbstuds so she won't be breaking her nails off on a nail nick, and it's very easy to open and close. You can get them with pink handle scales if she likes that color...

My wife carries a Kershaw Camber that I got her. She was happy with the Cryo she had, but I wanted to upgrade her EDC.

She also has a BK11 and collapsible baton in her purse, a Ruger LC9 IWB and pepper spray on her keychain. Needless to say, I'm quite afraid of her :D

Both my women carry spydercos. The young one a delica, lum, endura or matriarch, but usually the delica, or a bladetech ratel. The favorite is the ratel, its small, comes in pink, and is purse or clip carry friendly. The most useful is the delica. The older one carries a spyderco flag Q. She's a flag nut and I got it for an occassion and it's been in that purse for over 15 years.

This may sound crazy, but consider an OTF. Every time I handed my wife one of my folders to use for whatever it scared the crap out of me to watch her open and close it, instruction didn't seem to help much, she was just too intimidated by the sharp object. I ended up getting my wife an HK Epidemic because it keeps her fingers out of the way of the blade, at least for opening and closing the blade. She loves it and uses it more often than i thought she would. Brad.

Pink Opinel #8 in Inox.

Git yourself an N8 or N9 while you're at it.

My wife carries a nice little pearl handled 2 blade senator pen pattern from Queen, 80's era. She loves it, it fits her well.

My wife was not a knife person either. I challenged her to carry a pocket knife for one month. If at the end of that month she did not like carrying a knife I would not mention it again. She agreed to the challenge and at the end of the month she called carrying a knife "so handy".

She now has a pink Mini Grip, Benchmade 942 in red, and a Spyderco Kopa in mother of pearl. Of the three, she goes for the Grip most of the time, except when she is going business casual she carries the 942 because it is thin. The Kopa is the most difficult to open and close for her. Hope this helps.

I think her reasoning is spot on. It is a weapon (or at least can be used as such) she is not comfortable carrying. I would advise anybody against carrying a knife that is not comfortable using it in a fight and/or does not use it on a daily basis to perform the duties of his or her job. Sounds like she does not want or need a knife.
