Knife suggestions

I need some advice regarding purchasing a new knife. I am looking for one below $160. No real limitations, it just needs to be a durable utility/tactical folder. I'm pretty much stuck so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also does anyone know where I could purchase a bm 806d2. Sadly, I know it has been discontinued but I still have hope.

Thanks

There are a ton of good knives in that range. What size are you looking for, preferred lock type, and material? Blade shape?

You would probably want to call and ask if it is in stock, but they have it listed here Don't know if that is a good price or not, never priced out the knives before.

Like I said, I'm open for any suggestions. What are knives you like that are in that price range. Also I would prefer a blade length longer than 3 inches.

What do you want to use it for? Utility? SD? Both? is fast deployment a major concern?

Edit:
Is Assisted opening legal in your area, or Automatic?

There are a ton of knives in that price range. Personally, I really like BM knives, so my suggestions for heavier knifes on the tactical side would be the 806d2 (discontinued and a pain to get an any price (let alone a reasonable one) as you have probably figured out by now), 710, 94X (esp 943), 630, 73X, or griptillian (55X) (esp the ritter version), but the list goes on and on (those are just the ones that came to mind immediately).

For a somewhat smaller but still medium duty knife in the ~3 inch range I'd go for something like the 705 or 707 (I'm sure there are many more choices here, as well).

I'm sure many people here will recommend a look at Spyderco's knives as well (I think the military might be up your alley?), as well as those of many other manufacturers.

If you want any more help in narrowing it down, you really need to provide more information along the lines of your preferences on blade steels, blade length and shape, handle materials, locking mechanisms (I'm a big fan on the BM axis lock, myself), and anything else where you have any idea as to what might appeal to you (I'm sure I'm forgetting something).

I would like to keep the options open. Dual purpose. By the way the Knife you found is probably out of stock plus it's being sold for more than the retail. That's EXPENSIVE.

D2 steel is preferred. I would really like a knife similar to the 806. I really like the axis lock too. I already have a 710 so that's not an options.
Sorry for not being very specific. I made this post hoping to get some ideas I hadn't already thought of. That's why I'm not being giving many details.

Any thoughts on the emerson cqc7 super wave. I know it's more than $160, I just wanted info.

I doubt you're going to be able to find an 806 cheap these days. There was a thread a while back that involved even an old 800 model AFCK going for over $400 on ebay. I have no idea what the 806's are going for, but perhaps somebody else has been keeping an eye on them and can enlighten us.

more than retail eh? Probably is in stock then, and they are taking advantage of the market.

Well, there are so many choices I will just name a few of the knives I am interested in right now, or pop into my head

BM Rukus
BM Skirmish
Camillus Dominator
Kershaw Spec Bump
Swamp Rat Rat trap
Spyderco military
Spyderco Manix
Al Mar SERE 2000

I'll check out the military tommorow at a local shop. If anyone owns one please share your thoughts.

The Blackhawk "crucible" knife looks really good, but I don't own one......yet. I love the Manix, Chinook 2, and Rat-1 for folders.

And a blade length over three inches? Sounds like Manix territory to me.

If you are looking thinner, light, less heavy duty feeling, the Military is right up your alley. The liner lock on mine is extremely well done as far as liner locks go, and it has some of the best blade shape, grind, and edge geometry execution I've ever seen on a production folder.

I have the 806D2 as well as the two other knives I've mentioned, and to be honest, it's really hard to pick up that 806 when I know damned well my carbon fiber Military is going cut better, feel better in my hand and carry better due to being thinner and lighter. To be honest, I only keep my 806 because I love the appearance of he knife, as well as the Axis lock.

You could also go for the Chinook II, especially since it's now being shipped with the full, flat grind present on the Military and Manix. It's my all time favorite production folder.

What about the gerber applegate covert. Any info/advice/reviews.
The covert is the small, cheap version, I assume you mean the full size. It's way over priced, IMO. FRN handle, unimpressive blade steel, Gerber quailty, etc. I wouldn't touch the thing if I were looking at knives in that price range.

The Military is a good knife, a classic in fact (as is the 710) IMO.

I like it a lot. Good slicer, reliable liner lock, good steel blade, and a user-friendly handle. Your hand indexes to the rear of the handle, putting the blade out there.

BUT, it's not a knife I'd carry if I believed stabbing motions were to be a possibility. Your hand can relatively easily slide forward on the handle in such moves. And, even though I trust the lock on my Militay knives in most circumstances, stabbing motions into relatively hard materials, as well as straight twisting movements, have proven to me that liner locks aren't that robust in these situations. Of course, that's just IMO.

No. The mini covert is the small cheap one. What's wrong with the bigger knife. The construction and materials seem reasonable and it's available for under $1oo?
