Hey I new to the site. I'm looking into getting a fixed blade knife just not sure which to get. I want to use it camping, hunting and I would like it if it was throw-able. It doesn't need to be to centered around hunting because I'm not an avid hunter, but I might be going soon. It needs to be able to take a beating because when I go camping Im always making something. I was looking at the CS GI Tanto and the Condor Mountain Fixed 8 Blade. I don't have a very large budget, $20-25. I know it isn't a lot but I know you can get some good knives for that price range. I would really appreciate it if I could get some help in choosing a knife.

Thanks

Why would you possibly want it to be throwable? A knife may be the most important tool you have on you.

You don't risk parting with it. Doing so is faulty "outdoors" thinking.

Also...thowing knives are entirely different than cutting knives. They are made entirely differently. You throw a knife made for cutting...you lose the edge and/or it breaks.

The only knife I can think of that would be that cheap and still tough would be the Cold Steel GI Tanto.

You can get them for around $20 on a lot of sites.

That's true, I didn't think of it that way. What knifes would you guys recommend that are good all around outdoors?

Now that's a question!

In your $20-25 range would I have to go with a Mora knife. Well built, good steel, easy to maintain, great slicer.

Will take care of 97% of one's outdoors tasks. (100% if one is clever about it.)

Or a Victorinox Alox Farmer Swiss Army Knife.

Not a fixed blade, but incredibly handy outdoors (includes a saw!)

If your looking for a decent fixed blade for Camp/Hike I would look at the Condor Rodan ! It's built like a tank & for the money it would be hard to beat ! I've got the Condor Nessie & it is well worth the money
Any of the Condor Camp knives would be nice & Condor has awsome customer service

You can find most of these knives for about the price your looking for if you look around....Smokey Mountian knife works is a Condor dealer.

What is your budget? Camping and hunting knives in my opinion run around 4-6". I would not do a partial serrated blade. I define a camping knife by being able to light chop, baton, tinder, food prep, light shelter building and so on. These would be my recommendation (However heavy on the Price):

Fallkniven S1 (On my list)
Fallkniven A1 (My favorite!...does everything I need!!)...dont get the black coated on...it will wear off after 2 or 3 trips!

Why I recommend the above. Corrosion resistant, Convex Grind (My favorite grind), versatile, weight is nice, tough, holds and edge well, can chop decent, baton, skins, tinder well, food prep...all-around! It will cost you but IMHO you will not need another knife in this category.

On the Cheaper side:

Buck Nighthawk

Handle is its only weakness.

Super cheap..a who cares knife:

Gerber Big Rock. The title above says it all..who cares what happens to it! Plus gerber is dumb enough to offer a lifetime on it! It is a 30 dollar knife!

Honorable Mention:

CS SRK San Mai III

I did not recommend any Busse or Scrapyard because they are extremely hard to get and very expensive!! Although I do think they are awesome knives!! Probably the best of most!

Colt 286...can be had for ~$23 on Amazon...

I have one as my hunting/survival knife. Its more of a tactical design, but has a 5 1/4" blade made of 8CR14 (which is comparable to AUS8). Also comes with a mini survival kit (which doesn't really matter).

I know your budget is 20-25..but I would save up. You will more or less be buying something at some point that will cost you more...and you will do it once. For the 20-25...condor is a good pick. But I guarantee you will be upgrading sooner than you think.

My budget I guess is about $20-30 i guess. I I doubt about the upgrading cause my grandma has a thing about me and me wanting a bunch of knives and stuff like that. I like the Condor Mountain Knife with the 8" blade but most places have its handle in blue and I don't really like that. I liked some of the Chris Reeve Knives in this post but they are probably really expensive.

)If you want a knife you can beat the crap out of in your price range, I'd take a look at the Condor Rodan. It may not be a good hunting knife (or a thrower...) but for its size and price it can't be beat. Condor also has some knives that would be alright for hunting and general camp chores in that price range. I suggest checking out their website for a bit. I'm a fan of their bushcraft and bushlore designs (aesth... asth... looks-wise)

Another knife compant in your price range is Mora. They may not be as tough as the Rodan but realistically a Mora is all you'd need. They come pretty inexpensive if you look at the plastic handled ones (less than 15 usually) but you can go higher and get quite a nice knife for the money, such as the Mora Bushcraft Force.

Good luck finding a knife (and good luck keeping yourself from buying more after! :D)

If you have a price ceiling, then you do. With that in mind, I'm surprised no one's mentioned the Cold Steel Bushman FB. I have an older one that's just surprisingly handy, especially on camping trips.

I wouldn't suggest throwing your knife, either, but you can throw the Bushman &/or strap it onto the end of a length of wood (Branch, pole, whatever) & have a spear.

Another great choice would be a Mora. I am not familiar with Condor, but they look interesting. I do know, 1st hand, that the Mora or CS Bushman are excellent knives for the $.

Also, welcome to BladeForums, BTW.

YES, those knives will be quite expensive. I'm also of the belief that if you can only get one knife, you should probably spend a bit more time saving and pick up, say, a Ka Bar. That one will last you until you have the freedom to get whatever you want, and it will take care of you the whole time until, and after you do. They can be found for about twice your budget, but that's not that long to wait, is it?:)

Save up $20 more and get you a Buck Nighthawk or 119. Both are good knives for around $40-50. Boker (Magnum line) has some in the $20 range that look okay. Cold Steel has a few as well.

The original knife I was looking at getting was the CS Bushman. And Im not trying to be cheep guys I just need to be. If I had a job I wouldn't mind spend $40-50 on a good knife. I just need to get one that will last and do what I need till she see's me using it more and see's that is not going to be a waste of money. Then she will let me get a more expensive one. Its complicated finding a knife that you like both for purpose and aesthetically.

The CS Bushman is a fun knife. It may not be the best for any one job but it sures makes a good effort toward a lot different applications.

As a practical matter, the Mora would be a better choice if you include hunting.

The Condor Rodan would most likely fill the bill for all your needs. It is a very sturdy knife with a large handle and a five+ inch blade. It can get really sharp and likely will take pretty much any punishment. (It just seems awkward to me but I am growing to like mine.)

All three of those are in the $20-25 range.

Good luck.

Is Condor a newer company? I looked up a couple of their knives on you tube to see reviews and stuff but couldn't find any really.

I like the Rodan I just wish the blade was a little longer, Im wanting one with a little bigger blade. Dont really like the look of the Mora's. I Like the CS Bowie Bushmen and the CS GI Tanto because they seem from vids I watched like they too can take a beating. Hmmm...maybe I should continue looking find ones I like then ask your opinions on them.
