Suggestions for a good starter knife for women? Looking for a small keychain folder knife that can be used in case of emergency defense situations. 3.5" or less closed. Any recommendations are much appreciated!

I agree with the Pepper Spray. As for the knife, I'd suggest a Spyderco Dragonfly or Ladybug. The pepper spray won't get her in trouble, while the knife will if she uses it in a defensive situation.

Probably the worst of a terrible self-defence option anyway, but for straight-up utility, the Victorinox Rambler is an amazing keychain accessory/tool. :)

The Spyderco Ladybug with VG-10 steel is very small, but still no joke to play with. Mine is very sharp. I let my wife carry it, but I don't think she understands how close she came to poking our dog's eye out while she casually used it the first time (she held it at her side after using it and our dog wandered by like the dufus he is). I immediately warned that it looks cute, but it cuts for realsies.

Bah, just get something gigantic, like a Becker BK9. Realistically, I would say to get a SOG Twitch II. Not very cheap, but it's quite a quality build for a knife. Almost instant opening with the assist, a great steel, and extremely tough handles.

Not sure that it would be a good idea to put the seed of bladed self defense into a woman's mind...the thought could bring her more bad than good. So probably pepper spray would be a much better option.
As for the knife, a Vic Classic. Comes in colours and designs (let her pick it), excellent quality at a super price, has scissors and tweezers and nail file (she's a woman, after all).

im with yo. get her the Ontario marine raider bowie. If she's a killer just get her the vic classic for the manicuring & parcel opening & a nice screwdriver for the maiming & blinding of attackers.

Go to Tomar's Ka-Bars and look at the Dozier Folding knives. for around 20 bucks you get a well built light knife.
