A big and heavy knife. And let the other guy carry it.

I live in a rural area and see fresh bear scat nearly every day once the fruit trees are ready. And I'm sure they're still around at the other times too. I have never seen an actual bear here in the 15 years I've been here. Deer, rabbits, gophers, quail, pheasants and one coyote but never a bear. They avoid people.

I don't feel any need to tool up like I'm going outside the wire when I leave the house. If I was going up the mountain in the spring when they are waking up and hungry I would have a Plan B),

I’m surprised nobody mentioned the little bells for your shoes laces. The bells will keep you safe.

The YouTuber virtuovice lives in a part of Japan where there are a lot of bears. For this reason, he carries a heavy, military survival-type knife. Something robust, sharp and pointy. The length was only about 7 or 8 inches.

Whenever I'm confronted with a charging bear, I carry a remote control. Changing the channel has saved my life on numerous occasions.

Where are you at that you can't carry at least spray? Even national parks now allow firearms... I went bowhunting yesterday in grizzly and black country... I carried bear spray and a 10mm. I had a knife too, but imo if you are down to a knife, several things must have gone pretty bad and your odds are getting pretty grim at that point.

I would go with a spear or something that maximizes your distance. But if you get in close combat, eyes, nose, throat, and neck should be your targets. Ram your hand with the knife down throat if you can. Unless your blade is really long, I don't see a huge advantage from like 4.5-5" blade until like 10-12" plus...

I was thinking about him. He did a nice modification to a Cold Steel GI Tanto and turned it into a pretty sweet looking non-tanto “bear fighter”. I want to say another of his bear fighters is the KA-BAR Pilot Survival knife or something very similar. Also by using a KA-BAR he’s giving himself the best possible story if he survives, since after all, KA-BAR got its name from killing a bear…

The knife that I'm thinking of was very heavy, black, and with a clip point. More like a bayonet. In fact, I think a sharp bayonet may be appropriate for an attacking bear, since your strategy is going to be stabbing more than slashing. At last, that's how it looks from the armchair in my tv room. :)

Carry a baseball bat...
Shove down the bear's throat, and let him choke to death on it!
