Hi Gang- While I respect the safe-queen mentality, it took me too long to realize that my EDC knife is going to be a tool. Thank you, Ernest.
I don't care if the action is not super smooth, it will break in. Or, if the blade is not perfectly centered. Unless there is a major flaw, I'm going to use that knife and not worry about it. That's not to say I will not take care of it. Tools need to be maintained.
It seems like we have forgotten what a knife is for. Get a knife you like and USE it! Thank you, Dad.
Oh, and if you are on the fence about serrations, get them.

I hear you. I just have to have a smooth action with a centered and solid blade. I also clean my knives just about daily.

I also discovered a way to eliminate the need for grease or oil in the pivots on my Commander and my Spec War. Both actions are very smooth too.

My Super has yet to be disassembled and I see no need to as it has been very smooth and centered out of the box. So I'm sure the factory grease is still in it.

Rolf I find a lot of the nancys on here want pocket jewelry. They want some bling, a status symbol maybe? Anyways, for those of us who use our knives, we come from the group who sees it as a tool and respect it as a tool. We maintain our knives. The only other company I can think of who offers similar stuff is Spyderco. Knives that work. Not jewelry.

Thank you, Gentlemen.
I agree, re: Spyderco. "Designed for the hand, not the eye." Says Sal.
And, ibute21, we know that a well used knife is all the status we need.
If I may add, I use my Busse knife. INFI begs to be used. And, I will add Buck knives and the Sodbuster to the mix of use-me knives.

So because I ask dumb questions what Emerson is your EDC?

No such thing as a dumb question.
I EDC an HD7, CQC7B or my Jungle Commander.

I couldn't agree more. I'm not sure why the knife community seems so strongly anti-serration. The last time serrations kept me from doing anything was carving a bow drill kit, and I don't do that often enough to tailor my EDC folder around it.

Just about alof my "emergency" use folders will have serrations going forward. Letter openers and bushcraft knives will have plain edges.

Good man, Rolf, a healthy attitude if I ever heard one! And, I am glad you got your 7's back.

It seems you are preaching to the choir. Be sure though that those who do use their knives for collections and or show pieces are not alienated. You mentioned that you understand the safe queen mentality which is good.

No one should feel left out. There are circumstances that will never be known in some instances. It doesn't make them nancys. It's a rough and tumble crowd this Emerson club.

Great topic, Rolf!
Most of my knives are tools, I buy them collect them and use them AS tools. I do find myself having hard time to use some of my "safe queen" as they're too pretty to be used, and for those ones in most of times either sold or traded. ;)

Thanks, Ben.^ aka, drywall maniac! :D
Now, I do have some knives that just fer look'n at. These knives will be handed down unused.
Who's slogan was this? "Tools, designed to be used."
I loved this guy.

i carry most of my (folding) knives - i use my stonewashed xm18 hard since the tumbled finish does hide almost all scratches

but for example- i dont carry my mt scarabs because i dont want debris to accumulate inside - and i have bought them for an early euro price which exceeded the secondary market price for an emerson custom - thats why i cant even sell them now :D

i have a bm 42 to practice - although i had been "balisonging" since i was nine years old - the 42 is really messed up :)

i will use my cqc8 and future custom emersons but probably not as hard as my sw xm18 - it is so much cooler to have them with you and actually cut something rather than just having them in the display case to look at

I own no knives that I don't use. Not big on serrated blades though my 810 Contego has a combo blade. It works well with the combo blade for what its intended.
