Sometimes guys bring up knife topics that have already been discussed and some loser gives them a hard time about it.
I never understood that myself, I WANT to talk knives.
Why spend time searching out an old topic when it's SO easy to just start your own thread about it?

Maybe something will be brought to the table with new people on the forum.
If you don't like it don't read it. Better yet don't comment.
Be a participant! Not an a**hole.

Sometimes discussions go off the rails and it's nice to hit reset and look at it through fresh eyes.
That's my opinion anyway.
What is yours?

It's probably because they took the effort to make a well thought out and well written response the first time. It's kinda tiresome to keep doing that. Sometimes the guys that have answered repetitive questions will conclude that it's just laziness on the part of the new poster.

What's stopping that from happening in an old thread?

I feel that it should be logical to use the search function first. maybe there was a really great lengthy discussion on it a yr ago. or several. which would inevitably answer your question and if it hasn't then ask. 50,000 "A vs B" threads get kinda boring to look at. and they all seem to cover the same points. Now this isnt to say that I go onto each and everyone and be a complete a$$ about it but when half of the new threads are old topics it's slightly discouraging

What is the point of starting this thread in General Knife Discussion anyway? Besides attempting to incite people?

Searching is usually a faster solution that making a new thread. For instance, I was interested in buying a Pelican case for knife storage. I google searched bladeforums threads for Pelican cases and came back with a few very useful threads. Sure they were from 2009, but the information was still very useful to me. I could've made a new thread, but I decided to search first and got days/months worth of replies instantly. New product information is different however, because looking in the past will only yield old information. Things which are not time sensitive however, searching should be the preferred option.

Courtesy.

Why waste everybody's time starting a new thread when it's SO easy to do a search to see if the topic has been discussed, or the question has already been answered a few dozen times?

New views are always welcome. New knives can create new comparisons with old knives. Not every question has been asked, nor is everything searchable. But if the topic is "Why do people hate Cold Steel" or "Is the Sebenza worth it?", that can of worms has already been opened, and those worms have eaten the dead horse that was beaten into the dirt long, long ago.

Lol you be a participant. You decided to make this your 19th post after 2 years.

I don't think anyone should be rude on an internet forum, unless you are some faceless coward. I hate seeing rude posts like what you are referring to. I feel like it degrades the quality of this fine forum.

I'm sure there are several new members a year that are grandparents, and I know mine had trouble just using the Internet, let alone a forum search. Let them post their threads. if you don't want to be helpful AGAIN, then ignore the thread and move on. Now I'm not talkin about helpful posts that have a short/quick answer and then suggest using the search function for FURTHER information. I'm talking about the posts that say "OMG ThIs ToPiC has been brought up sooOoooOoOo many times, use the search function!!!11!" I doubt most of you talked to your own grandparents that way.

Also, I think the search function on most online forum searches aren't even close to the quality of using google and "site:bladeforums.com ...". So if you wanted to be real specific and helpful on searching BFC, then you would be kind enough to mention that little trick.

OK, rant over. Next time, use the search function if you want to see this again!

I have to disagree with this. He asked what we thought about rude "USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION??!!" posts that crop up every now and then on popular thread topics, not what we thought about his post habits. Your current profile says that you also had a two year period of no posts from 2009 to the summer of 2011. I have no problem with periods of forum inactivity, I am just wondering why you seem to.

First of all this really should not be posted here in the first place as there is nothing knife related in it. Take it over to tech support. Yes I'll agree with you that the search here kinda sucks but right underneath it there is an advanced search. And i can honestly say that it worked 100% of the time for me. But I also have to agree with someone that said earlier that this post seemed a little inciteful. I personally do not think that it is a huge deal to ask someone to search the forums before they post a thread. I know that I did or at least tried to when I started because i did want to look like the idiot that could not use the search function. Look I'm not trying to pick a fight with you, my first post was said sarcastically, I just do no think that it is a big deal to use the search function before posting.

I agree with you, blazerman, that it isn't a big deal to use the search function before posting. I much prefer that because I like my questions answered instantly, instead of having to wait a couple days to get all the answers I wanted. I just thought the OP was referring to rude comments, particularly the ones that make a new member feel unwelcome and stupid for not searching first, then scaring them off.

I absolutely think it's a great idea to mention to a (hopefully new) member that he should search the site for answers, or going above and beyond, do a little research yourself for the new member. It's just that I've seen rude posts (probably by trolls) in the past about using the search function, and it boils my blood to see people treated with faceless contempt. So I thought I would rant here, that's all. And I think it should be in tech support also, or whine and cheese? Isn't that subforum for whining rants like my post? Maybe.

I agree. What is the point of having a forum if you can't pose a question for the sake of discussion? I assume, and in IMO so should others, that if someone takes the time to start a thread then they are looking to get NEW perspective on the topic or question. In my opinion Posting a response of "use the search function first" is not only a rude and worthless post but it should be against the rules of conduct as it discourages participation and prevents NEW information about a topic from being disclosed. That's my 2 cents anyway.

but .. if you use the search function , you know that only leads to necro'ed threads :P

it does pay to have a look at the subforums and see what one is going to fit your question best and have a browse thru whats allready being discussed there for the last few pages

still , everyone is new to forums at one time .. not everyone is born knowing everything , well some are but they dont come to forums to ask questions they allready know it all , and they go on to be handlers of politicians or something ...

I feel sorry for the people that handle some politicians .. Id be always washing my hands after just thinking about it , life has to suck when you know everything ..

anyway back to the topic ..

I'm new here but not to Internet forums. My post count is reaching 8,000 over on ReefCentral a saltwater aquarium board.

It's the same over there. When YOU get tired of answering the same question for the millionth time, it's time for YOU to step away. I've posted maybe twice over at ReefCentral in 2011. I still have my reef tank. I was tired of talking about it. You think there is a lot to knives, set up a reef tank.

I agree with the OP. If the question irradiates you, just don't answer it. I'm new and excited about knives. I don't want to search. I want to talk about MY knife.

"Use the search function" is all good and fine sometimes, but that assumes that it is easy to find what you are looking for. I would suggest that some of the people who say that try it themselves, even with VERY specific search terms, and see what they actually come up with.;)

I thought this was going to be a list of topics that have been beaten to death so we wouldn't have to see them again. :p
Seriously, new blood in the knife industry is a good thing. That means that we need to be patient and allow for some redundancy now and then.
Save the newbs!
