Knife topics that have already been discussed.

I think I see a polarization here. The newcomers want to just post and not use search. The older(earlier registrants) encourage search.

A number of good posts have come up on both sides of the issue, things I didn't think of.
That is why I asked the question in my OP "what's your opinion?"
I'm far from a know it all, especially about knives.

I'm not here to (although not above when dealing with jerks :D) inciting people. Let's get that out of the way.
I just ask what is on my mind.

I will always come back to this, if you do not like it do not continue to read it.
You're an adult it's totally all up to you how you conduct yourself.
I don't think I am wasting anybody's time by starting a new thread, see above statement in bold type.

I spent most of the last 2 years over at the Benchmade forum reading and asking the cool people there all about 710's that were my big interest. Now I'm looking to widen my knowledge and views. So that is why I have a low post count for the last 2 years I haven't been here. Lately I have been pretty active I'd say! I've even started a few new threads.

I'm not new to internet forums. I have used the the search function many times but sometimes I do not get the specific results I want. I like to have my own party. Everybody is invited.

I guess I just question the motivation of guys who come on and say "use the search function" and add nothing else.
I think they just want to be authoritative over others. Why even click on the the thread if you are not up for the discussion?
However it is super helpful if guys come on and say "Hey dude, here is a link to what I think you are looking for".
Then I may raise a repeat issues but tailor it to get the answer I want.

-I like to contribute and shoot the breeze about knives but this forum has been going for a long time I've heard it's poor form to resurrect a dead thread.

I'm not here to troll, just discuss and read about what I am interested in.
I don't know what IBTM means.

Cheers all!

The thing about forums is there will be repeated topics and that's every forum I have been on over the years so it's really not a big deal.

There will be new people who haven't gotten the whole forum search idea yet so they start new threads, again not really a big deal.

The only time I'm bothered by repeat threads is when the same topic has been posted within the last month or so, using very similar keywords. There is no excuse for posting "What's your EDC?" when there's an eternal, massive thread with the same info. I'll also see stuff like "Tell me why I should buy a 0550"; I don't care if you're an old member or that's your first post -- the fact is, that thread gets posted something like once every month and there's no excuse for adding another.

Use your best judgment when it comes to resurrecting an old thread; if the thing is less than a year old (heck, even 2 years or maybe more), you're probably fine bumping it up with fresh questions or incite. 6 year old thread? Feel free to start a new one.

As for why you might not want to post a repeat thread unnecessarily? Bandwidth and storage. Those aren't free if you didn't know. This doesn't apply as much to paying members, but for newcomers it's a matter of good manners and respect. At the end of the day, someone is paying for each byte of data stored on Bladeforums.com, and every new thread adds to the total. By repeating recent thread topics, not only are you frustrating some folks, but you're adding unnecessarily to the "bulk" of the site as a whole.

Search it out first and if the info you seek isn't found and no recent similar topics exist, feel free to start a new thread. Otherwise, I think it's best to work together to keep all related and relevant information as condensed as possible, which makes the forums easier to read and search for everyone.

Very well said.

You're going to get flak either way. If you start a thread that's been done to death, you'll get a 'use the search function' post. If you resurrect a thread that's more than a year old, you'll get a 'ZOMBIE thread' post.

So, if you're just looking for information, use the search function.

If you want to talk about your knife, start a new thread.

Or do both, or do neither. I really don't care. It's only the internet.:)

"It's only the internet".

In my case if I had that attitude, I would have missed out making quite a few lifetime friends in this community and I feel sorry for those who treat BFC as "only the internet", but to each their own.

Sometimes it does bother me to see how some folks asking questions are treated. (I am not talking about the childish Zombie threads and other threads which many times seem to be a method of garnering little received attention from elsewhere.

We have a forum for letting out steam in non-polite ways, but to treat people poorly in General is not the answer and in fact does more harm than good. I have preached it for years, but we still have hard heads who seem to prefer borderline insults and trolling when all they have to do is skip the thread.

The way we treat newcomers to BFC can have a strong effect in the knife community, BFC and the future of our hobby, business (in many cases) and it's healthy growth.

That just does sink in to some folks and that is unfortunate.

You remind me of freshman 'valley girl' wanna-be's who have to take a history class.

They constantly whine how useless history (past discussion and knowledge) is when they can just look something up on their i-Phone.

Being HUMAN is about USING TOOLS ... Not letting your tools use you. KNOWING THINGS and learning SKILLS is the way you do that - not by becoming a slave to technology (or in your case, OP, the whims of other posters).

I agree on both sides. It does get kind of boring answering the same questions over and over, when all someone has to do is do a little research. But, this is a knife forum, and we like talking about knives. If no one bothered making posts and searched instead, this place would be dead. How many truly unique topics get posted everyday? I would imagine not too many since only a few new knives come out every month.

Mr.Trooper I'd like you to go deeper into your meaning because I read your post 3 or 4 times and your deeper meaning escapes me.
I really tried to get it but I don't understand how I'm fall slave to the the whims of others posters. I'm definitely not whining about past discussions.
I think you have something to say, it's probably valid but you need to articulate it better.

I think you took my comment the wrong way. I meant it as it's not something I should get pissed about. There are plenty of things in my life that take precedent. I'm fighting cancer and my wife is as well. In the end, "it's only the internet" is meant that there are other priorities that I'm putting my energy into.
