Hello everyone, I am looking for a knife under $75 dollars. It will be a EDC. I love Kershaws, so I am pretty sure I am going to get a Kershaw, but I am just not sure which one. I am looking at the cyclone currently, but I see it has an on/off switch for the speedsafe. My only problem with that is I don't want to pay the extra money for that feature that I will never use, I mean I don't really get the point of it. what other stuff is good by Kershaw? I definitely want assisted opening though.

thanks!

Hey rootsmart, welcome to Bladeforums.

Here is a quote from Kershaw's website
"What is SpeedSafe®?
SpeedSafe® is the patented, assisted-opening system built into many of Kershaw's best-selling Ken Onion knives. SpeedSafe® assists the user to smoothly open the knife with a manual push on the blade's thumb stud or Index-Open system. (Index-Open uses a protruding portion of the blade's finger guard to give the user an alternative to the thumb stud. The user manually pulls back on the protrusion with the index finger to open the blade.)"

The on/off "switch" is just a small slider at the end of the knife
to hold the tip in place.

It would be easier to list the knives that Kershaw has that are
OVER $75.
There are a lot of selections for under $75, the most popular probably being the Leek.

Oh so the on/off switch is pretty much just a safety. I thought it turned on and off the speedsafe capability.

It does. You can either use it like any other speedsafe knife or turn it off and use it like a manual flipper or just use the thumb stud.

No, I believe he is right. It is just a safety. To use it as a manual flipper or the thumbstud would require you to remove the torsion bar from inside the knife.

No, no, no. The Tip Safety is different from the On/Off switch. The On/Off switch disables the torsion bar, allowing the knife to open manually and under no tension. The On/Off switch is on the spine of the handle, the Blade safety is sliding piece of plastic that physically prevents the blade from opening.

ok so the on/off switch enables and disables the speedsafe part of the knife. May I just ask, is that useful really? I can't think of any real good uses for it.

It can be useful if your in a group and or around sheeple that you think it may intimidate by using the speedsafe. You have the option of a manual opener or speedsafe opening.

I'm partial to the Leek, so............. ;)

If you are looking for a fairly large folder, get the Junkyard Dog II. If you are looking for a small knife, get a Chive. I have one of each (as of about an hour ago), and they are both EXCELLENT! You CAN'T go wrong with ANY Kershaw, so whatever one you end up with will be a very good purchase!...

Look at the Blur SG2. It's an absolutely superb knife. The blade steel is the quality that really sets it apart for me. Takes and holds an edge like a razor. Easy to sharpen and maintain. Assisted opening is very nice (no safety as desired). At the top end of your budget but if you purchase it from the "pharmacy", then you should be in good shape.

Good luck!

i would highly recommend a Blur with S30V steel. they can easily be found for a little more then your 75$ limit (in the 85 dollar range) but you get a heck of a good designed knife with a premium steel.

Also check out your knife laws for where you live. You may need a smaller knife to keep you legal so check that out before you make your decision

Good thought to go for a Kershaw. You won't be disappointed. A great support system, both thru this site and having Thomas around. Tho I've never needed it, I gather Kershaw's Customer Service is second to none.

Before I add my 0.221929 pesos to this, let me get some more info.

You said it will be an EDC. How big (relatively speaking) are your hands? You don't want an EDC to be uncomfortable, size wise. What will the knife be used for? For work? Just to have in your pocket in case you need a knife?

My EDC Kershaws have been whittled down (no pun intended) to my Cyclones (the standard ones - my Ti/ZDP lives mostly in my gun safe) when I know I need something fairly large and strong, or my Scallions, for those times I just want a good sharp knife that will fit in the watch pocket of my jeans.

Both come in under your price. Both are SpeedSafe. In fact, do some shopping and you could possible get both for a few dollars above your budget.

Some added info on your part will help in making the proper selection. I hope this helps.......
