Knife use on college campus

I start my program in another week or so with a field school. Item#2 on the required field school gear list is a "sturdy, quality knife". We'll use them for collecting plant samples. I think I'm covered:D As for on campus carry, I'm sticking with a SAK Huntsman and my trusty Izula.

My college has a no weapons policy, but it does not specifically forbid knives.

I carry my K-Tusk in a belt sheath that rides high, so my shirt always covers it. 99.9% of the cutting jobs are done by my leatherman. I only pull out the Fixed when the job requires. I haven't had any problems yet.

As we all know a percentage of the people we meet are going react like your shooting at them if they see you using a knife to slice an apple, fortnightly they’re a minority, unfortunately however they often show up in much higher concentrations on college campuses. They also tend to be the “decision makers” on campuses. As said above, using your head while using your knives is always a good idea, particularly so on a college campus.

Virtually all of your general knife needs on a campus will be more then adequately severed by a small slicing knife.

Think about those things when choosing what you bring, a knife like the Spyderco ZDP Caly 3 (or something similar) is a good choice. Its small, elegant and very non threatening, its also an incredible little utility knife it will more then handle everything you need for your entire college career no matter how many senior years you have.

Basically the best advice is go for something small and elegant (if it would look out of place with a suit it might not be the best choice) and use your head when using it.

Edit: the above is in addition to a SAK, is your college life is anything like mine the bottle opener will come in handy.

Also, get a knife with some color--it'll help de-weaponize people's opinions of your knife. I work at a knife store and demonstrate the psychological effect of knife color to folks by holding up two mini griptilians--one with a black handle, one with a blue. I then ask them which looks more threatening. They ALWAYS say the black one.

my $0.02...

a Leatherman or a SAK is much more sheeple friendly than some funky tacky-kool blacked out blade spiked monstrosity.

keep the knife as non-aggressive as possible.

while it may, or may not, be legal for you to have a knife on campus at all, it's how you use it that's likely to dictate if you get in trouble with it.
