Knife used in "Man vs Wild' series on Discovery

I laugh hysterically at some of the stuff he does but I think everyone is missing the point of the show. It's very showy and maybe even a little tongue-in-cheek, but it's entertaining and supposed to be about worst case scenario. He seems like a decent guy. I have been very surprised to see the cheap dive knife thing and the Gerber Gator. I love the Gerber Gator but I just figured he would use more expensive cutlery.

I mentioned Man v Wild in another forum. Big mistake. I really got taken to task for it. It really must be a comedy. Leslie Neilson started out being a straight actor, them wham, Naked Gun. There is always hope. Then again, there is always the chance that something might happen in the upcoming stingray swimming episode.

OFF TOPIC: You've never seen Airplane! have you?

On the show I saw.. he was in the rainforest. Fixed blade with a saw-toothed back and a cord cutting notch behind the saw teeh near the hilt.

I liked the design... just can't find what knife it was.

He takes the path of MOST resistance because that's the macho SAS way he was trained:eek: , Make no mistake he is one tough SOB. I believe he also went through Frencl legion training as well... just to see if he could do it.

He would probably have no troublwe with BUDS either.

I think that eating termites in that one show got to his stomach..... and mine!

Anyone recognize that knife?

I gotta agree about Man vs. Wild. That guy takes so many unnecessary risks. Plus it seems to me that so much is staged. The camera crew is probably giving him twinkies as soon as the cameras are off. Survivorman is a much better show. That guy does a much better job, and does things like show you how to make snares and traps to catch animals, or build a shelter and make a fire with a firebow. Both shows are entertaining though.

99.99999% of the people in the world will never be in the postion he's in. And the other 0.00001% probably haven't seen the show.

So, he can do pretty much anything that's entertaining.

I, for one, am not taking notes.

Interesting to compare Bear and Les, particularly thier contrasting Costa Rican shows (I didn't see Bear even chew those termites before he swallowed them...). And yeah, Bear obviously takes unnecessary risks, usually involving potentially twisting his ankle or breaking a leg. In one episode he even free-climbed about 40' up a tree instead of seeking a natural vantage point, mis-using precious energy, IMO...

Les isn't as sexy I guess, and seems more mature (those boring Canadians...);)

I liked the way Les proved the use of a airplane battery to ignite a fire.
Also how Bear reminded everyone how they can establish a relative East-West line by the top point of a standing stick's shadow marked over time.

Nothing like turning a simple question about a guy's knife into another debate and bringing Les Stroud into it! I think the knife is a titanium dive knife of some sort.

Les Stroud is a boring Canuck ( I do like him) but who wants to watch somebody sit around and do little or nothing on a show about surviving. While Les may take a more reasonable approach (for your average joe) Bear looks at it as you already being in the situation of being a hiker in the rainforest or the alps or what not...He takes the aggressive nature of finding a way out and does it with energy and yes entertainment to make a television show.

You said it your self, its a T.V. show, if you want more info on how to survive compard to M vs.W, watch survivor man, you wanna watch elephant poop being drank, and wrigling snakes being eaten watch M vs. w ;) :D

My kids and I find the show pretty intertaining. I'm wondering why he would chose a Ti dive knife for survival? From his backround he must know at least a little about blades. I didn't think a Ti blade could hold up to batoning with a big rock like that. (Probably borrows the camra guys Busse and GB Hatchet off air) :)

Not sure why he uses it. Strength and light in weight I would imagine. Although I don't know why weight would be an issue considering all he really takes is his knife and a water bottle.

Sorry, just been watching the man that is Bear, I was late to catch on, and I have to say he is HARDCORE..

so what if he does stupid stuff... he is the definition of nails, he was special forces, only left due to a broken back from a failed paracute opening in south africa, was told he may NEVER walk, got better anyways, then climbed EVEREST to become the youngest climber of it ever to live to tell the tale, and then went and owned the antarctic... bottom line...

BEAT GRYLLS COULD KILL YOU WHEN HE WAS IN A COMA - THATS HOW HARD HE IS

:D:D:D:D:p:p

so what if he does stupid stuff...

because not everyone watching the programme will think that it's stupid stuff and will emulate him while stuck in the wilds with no cameramen to back him up

and honestly, i don't think the special forces nowadays advocate being stupid for the sakes of looking tough

The other night homeboy ate meat off of a quite dead zebra , raw , just pulled it off with his teeth as casually as if he was eating kabob at a BBQ.
I came this close --- to losing my dessert , but I did not change that channel !
Now tell me , who is the real survivor ? :D

I have not seen him use a knife yet.

Sorry, just been watching the man that is Bear, I was late to catch on, and I have to say he is HARDCORE..

Kids who skateboard without helmets think they are Hardcore as well, until they are mumbling piles of dead braincells.

Just because the guy has an exciting past doesnt make him any more or less hardcore, IMHO. If a guy I hiked with acted like him, I'd be looking for any chance to ditch them as fast as possible. A guy like this is more likely to injure himself and die in the woods than the average hiker with two grains of common sense.

The problem with these shows is they are on TV to entertain the average viewer. I do like watching them, but not for any value in learning techniques.

Funny thing about survival, it would seem to me that the true survivor, is the guy sitting at home in front of TV watching man vs wild. And not the guys running around in the woods putting them self at risk all the time........:0)

He has used more than one knife. One was indeed a half-serrated Gerber Gator. Another was an El-cheapo fixed blade with a can-opener on the back of the blade's spine. The black coating was removed.

This is the first good reason I've had to get cable tV in years.

I have not seen either TV show, still I must say,

IT'S ONLY A TV SHOW!!!!!!! :)

Survivor man is a much better show, plus the guy doesnt have anyone there, he carries all his own stuff and films everything himself.

Though this man vs wild guy does know his stuff. Some of the stuff he does is stupid, but some of the stuff he does is also to show us the very worst case senario.
