Knife vise question

I have a home made one the same as the TKS one . It is excellent and very useable. Maybe by just looking at that catalogue picture you could make one for yourself. Mine has one wooden block, and a metal block with a centered hole to accept the tightening screw inside with overlays of 9 ounce leather. THe wooden block is attatched with a couple of screws. I'm sure you don't need to have two. The square tubing on mine is in a 4" size. Frank

This site has the complete version of the Chuck Ward vise.
With all the attachments I know of no other as versatile.

That vice looks great and that attachment seems like it would be extremely useful, can't wait to pick up.

I have the tab version of the one from Tracy. It's a SOLID piece of work. Overbuilt may be a better term, but it's a nice tool. I picked it up out of the box, and the center tube was not tightened down...slid out and landed on my foot. Luckily, it was a glancing blow :D.

I use one in the style Tracy sells. One of the two main differences, as I see it, from the other style is that you can pass (and clamp) longer pieces of steel through it out the other side. The way I use it I can change the inserts too. I've worked one up that holds a heavy bar of steel clamped beneath the blade to aid with draw filing. Over all it's a pretty effective tool, although a bit clunkier than square one. On the other hand, if you get the square one that has the additional angle bracket in it, it will rotate on three axis (the other main difference). The best you can do with the round one is take the inner tube out of the T section, remove the T section and reinsert the inner tube straight up and down in the base.
