Here's the list of knives I'm considering, one of them will be my new EDC! Mainly I cut plastic wrap and other plastics, along with cardboard, carpet, somtimes wood or wire, and Rope. Most of my cuting is a pull cut so a knife that could stab would be nice but definatly not a determining factor. Tip strength as well as over all strength and durability is most important to me. So here's my list!

Spyderco:
Impala
Lum Tanto folder
Merlin
Rescue 93mm

Benchmade:
806D2
942
921

I realize that the last two benchmades don't have the hole and they are smaller but they have had my attention since they were made. Also I know that the axis lock rules but, I've never any other lock fail on me and like I said I do a lot of pull cuts.

Thanks so much for your help and thoughtful replies:D

P.S. If the knife you'd like to suggest is not on this list I've probably already had it or I'm not considering it. :p

Hi Knife11,

I would have to go with the Benchmade 942 or if you prefer a clip point instead of a tanto 943 I assume you want a black knife since your choice was a 942 (940 and 941 are green).

I carry a :D 941 :D as my EDC and I was in love with it from the first flick. Warren Osborne  did a supper job in designing this knife and BM does a super job making it. The blade is 154CM and it holds a razor sharp edge very well (when it does need sharping I suggest the Spyderco Sharpmaker). The main advantage of the axis lock in my oppion is your finger is never in front of the blade when opening or closing the knife. You can't close any locking blade folder faster that an axis lock either.

The 921 is also a Osborne design and I've heard good things about it. It has 2 blades (a first for BM I think) the main blade is 154CM axis lock and the second blade (back blade hence the term "SwitchBack") is 440.

FYI at last count there were over 30 models of the 94x BM available 16 in standard production and the rest in limited editions. As you can see it is a very popular knife with BM fans.

I would say the merlin, it's designed for cutting rope etc, and the recurve helps in the sort of tasks you mentioned. The lum tanto would be good, but it's a big blade for EDC (maybe that's not a problem)

Umm the 921 has S30V for the main blade... but thanks Clyde! ;)

the 94X model benchmades are very nice knives, but they are not made for cutting carpet or other heavy-duty tasks. I would recommend the 806D2 for durability, although if you can find a FRN Merlin cheap you can beat it up without fear, and that hawkbill blade is perfect for pull cuts. I dunno about the Impala, looks ok but I would take the 806 over it as an all-around knife. The Lum tanto has a tip that is probably too thick to be very useful for the practical tasks you have. The emergency knife is ok, but if I were you I would choose the merlin over it due to the blade shape.

Spyderco "Merlin" ( not to mention the fact I own one of these! )

AET ;) (ATE on the Spyderco.com "home" forum ;))

Upon further review I realized the merlin is under 3 inches I don't thinks that's gonna cut it (no pun intended). I'll probably need more cutting edge than that. Unless someone wants to convince me that the hawk blade will still be just a good as a bigger straight blade.

I would recommend the Merlin.
Don't let the size of the blade bother you--most carpet and plastic cutting is done with just a Stanley utility knife, with a very small razor blade.

Good luck,
Allen.

Spyderco Lum Tanto!

Ever seen one in person? That's one HECK of a utility knife! That blade thickness and geometry is really useful and strong. It's really in a different class than the others you listed.

Any thoughts on the waiting for the spyderhawk instead of getting the merlin... how big is the spyderhawk anyway?

I believe the blade on the SpyderHawk is going to be 3-5/8" in an Endura handle.

Don't let the size of the Merlin get you. I cut a LOT of boxes(up to 80/night) using my Cricket... did that from March 01 til Nov 01 when I left. 8 months without a problem.

I now carry a Merlin PE and love it. I plan to pick up the larger brother when it comes out into regular production(don't need 3 knives waiting on me to send payment).

Heavy duty work, GO with the Spyderco Impala dang nice strong knife maybe Spydercos strongest ever, The BM 806 D2 would be the second choice. But for anyone who hasnt picked up a Impala it's just a impressive feel and a heavy duty cutting tool.
