Knife Vote

My suggestion would be for a plainedge Merlin. A hawkbill excels in doing all of the tasks that you describe, plus you could buy two for less than the cost of my second choice, the BM 806D2.

Raise your hand if you think that the results of my vote are tainted by the fact that the merlin is probably the least expensive knife so more people have had it. On second thought just post a reply. ;)

I've had (and have) several. My EDC rotation is a 941D2CF, a Socom Elite and a small Sebenza. Since I got the 941D2CF, the other two have been getting more shelf time. It's so much knife in such a sleek package that it's easy to keep with me wherever I go (barring airports of course). Great lock, solid manufacturing and the blade looves to cut. Besides, as someone mentioned, there's a lot of choice in materials available so it's almost like a custom. I love the D2 and carbon fiber on mine, but I've also got a red handled one with a Boron Coated 154CM blade. It's cool too (although I like the D2CF better).

The other knives are all nice, but there's something special about this size/shape/design that just works for everything I need to do.

I have, had, or handled all those knives. It's just that a hawkbill is the most efficient design for your intended purposes. The fact that Spyderco's are good values is just a bonus. If it will make you feel better I can sell you a Merlin for $100. :D

On a serious note, if you want a more upscale knife you can still find the discontinued Harpy around, hawkbill and G10.

Here ar ethe result so far...keep voting though I know there are more of you that could share your opinion, Thanks

806 3
942 2
Merlin 6
Lum 2
Impala 1

I thought the harpy was Stainless steel handle.

I have 'em all (except the Spyderhawk of course)

For rock solid cutting - get the Stainless Harpy, VG-10 steel
If you feel you need/want a plain edge, get the Merlin.

I would definitely rule out the Lum Tanto and Impala. Sturdy they are, but I would not use a liner lock for the tasks you have in mind.

The Benchmade blades aren't really ones I would consider for your purposes, although the axis-lock 806 is very attractive overall for having a hole opening, axis-lockin', finger-groovin' handle. I just think the hawkbill is more efficient for your tasks.

Knife11, they made the Harpy in G10, as well. A great little knife and if you look around you can still find them.
