Knife vs Hawk

Here's mine:

BlackHawkKnives.jpg

The handle is a Cold Steel 22" with the ends sawed off slightly, leaving me with a 21" length. It's scorched and treated with two coats of satin polyurethane, seven brass "cone" tacks on each side.

Good looking hawk.

I've never tried a hawk, but they look like they could be kind of fun.

My issue is that I think I might be among the "lesser skilled" with axe type objects. My other issue is with the length. When I compared my BK9 to my 14in Hatchet (admittedly, not a hawk) the BK9 actually out chopped it by a good margin. So I wonder how the hawks would fare if limited to a similar size haft.

I am impressed with the use and photos of the hawk being used for little stuff, it did pretty well actually.

And I guess the hammer would be useful, but for pounding in things I would think it would be just as easy to use a rock, or your baton or something else, so I'm unsure how I feel about them right now.

Maybe I'll give one a try eventually :).

I have both. The 9 gets used. The hawk, not so much.

Having a 9" long knife is better for me in the woods, than a 3" hawk.

For me anyways.

Moose

It's not the size... :D

the chainsaw evidence there is mightier than the sword?

:D

Chainsaw?:D

We've been cleaning out a fencerow. There may have been chainsaws involved.

I have the CS trailhawk and riflemans hawk. I think they are fun to use but not real axes.

I agree, but they are easier to carry than a real axe.

The Trail Hawk is a great tool. Unfortunately, I went and prettied mine up and now can't bear to use it. My oldest was giving me a hard time about that, so it'll get taken out probably on my next packing trip. I'm currently a little unhealthily obsessed with my newish BK9, and my Cutlass Machete before that. It's kind of a win-win-win :D

excellent write-up! between this and gingivitiskahn's previous thread, i think i'll try one too.

The first wood tool i ever bought was a cold steel Trail hawk back in 2007 and I picked up a Ontario Rat 5 in 2008, man I used that trail hawk for all of my chopping and cutting and firestarting chores. I found it a very useful tool and I hardly ever used the Rat 5.

I like the SOG! That's what I have and I think its the lightest tomhawk options you can find. It weighs about a pound and is plenty fun for dayhike chucking. You'll notice the spike end is just as useful for the blade end for tossing. It'll stick either way!

What changed? Obviously your a beckerhead now, so I'm just wondering :D.
