I read all the time about large folders and I really don't get them. While I understand that having a big knife is advantageous sometimes, the big turnoff for me is the weight. There are some folders that tip the scales at 8 ounces or more. How do you even carry something like this? I'm truly wondering if I'm missing something here. Is there some way to carry these large folders that I don't understand?

For me it's a matter of method of carry. I generally keep a knife clipped to my strong side pocket. Because of the climate in Florida I often wear short pants.

When I'm wearing exercise shorts around the house or at the gym I keep a 3 - 3.5 oz folder clipped to my pocket. When I'm wearing walking shorts or long pants I can carry a 5 - 6 oz folder comfortably.

If I carried bottom of pocket or in a belt sheath I would consider other weights.

I voted for 3 to 5 oz as maximum I'm comfortable carrying but of course if I have a specific task in mind that could change. When I go backpacking/hiking I generally carry a larger knife than I would otherwise.

For generaly edc I really prefer something under 3 oz.

i think the weight depends on the shape of the knife. I have some that are heavy but are more comfortable than some that are much lighter due ti their design. i also carry a ruger lcp in my pocket 98% of the time and it was heavy and bulky in my first holder then i made a good well designed one and now i hardly notice it.
ignore the knife but that is the gun i carry daily

It just depends on what you use it for. I am a crane operator for a drilling company and my folders see severe work , I broke a strider in half , got me a manix rite now that is holding up well

Lately I've been carrying smaller knives because of length restrictions; but I regularly carry a Buck 110, weight is not an issue with me, as long as I don't forget to put on my belt.

Oddly enough, anything on my belt has to be under 5oz, but having 2lbs in my pocket doesn't bother me.
(I regularly carry several heavy folders in one pocket, just because I can.)

If you carry a pistol, knife, flashlight, phone, pen, wallet & keys, as I'm sure many forumites do, the weight adds up. If I had my druthers my knife would be no more than 2-2.5 oz., but my EDC is actually 3.4 oz. (it's a D. Ralph 'trigger' with 3.25" blade).

Sometimes all I carry is a SAK. Other times I include a skyline. And yet certain times (when I am in a rural area) weight does not matter so much. Especialy when I am in my hometown, I know that a knife on my belt is normal, let alone in my pocket -and the propensity to use a larger knife is increased.

For urban EDC, a SAK and a skyline does it all. If I am feeling "saucy" I might carry something large for no utilitarian reason at all:eek:. Generaly though, urban EDC has a 5 OZ limit and I usualy dont go over 4OZ. Rural edc has almost no limit -depending on how rural, I might choose a fixed blade.

but again, in all circumstances I may just carry a Vic SAK -MacGyver style:D.

If it's over 5oz they tend to stay home. I loved my BM mini Rukus and 520 Presidio, but they stayed in the drawer until I sold them.

Give me a big honkin folder every time:thumbup:. I get used to feeling them in my pocket and every time I carry a small knife I always get a sick feeling like it slipped out and into a car seat, couch or worse...someplace where I dont have a chance of recovering it. I had dress pants on once and parked on a hill and my Buck 500z(slimline, not light but much lighter than a 110) fell out onto the road. I heard something but didnt see anything on the road so I didnt give it another thought until I got to work and realized it wasnt there.:barf::mad:

For general edc I really prefer something under 3 oz.
+1. I carry an A.G. Russell Folding Hunter in 154CM as my EDC. It weighs 1.7 oz and all but disappears in the bottom of my pocket. For me, that's perfect.

I like to feel weight of my knife. But weight it self has little meaning aslong its with-in reasons.

It depends on how they carry. My BM Rukus carried fine I felt BUT the extra bit of size on the ZT302 made it a burden

I voted 8-10 oz. A ZT300 is 8, so is my Burn stiletto. My HD Maxx is incoming today and will become my new primary. I'll see what it tips the digi at.
