Knife with Sapphire Blade! (no metal)

yes its an amorph material (liquid), similar to liquid metal (which i heard makes fairly good blades).

all ceramics are brittle, just drop a sharpmaker rod on the ground and you will see, however they can be very strong, a regular blade needs both toughness and strenght. ceramics are not suited as knifematerial as it is now at least, maybe in the future.

as for taking ceramic blades on planes, forget it, the xray-machines "see" materials with high density, may it be glass plastic steel or whatever, the see it easily, so this is a nonissue.

No, it is an issue. They x-ray carry on luggage, people walk through a METAL DETECTOR. No metal=nothing to detect. So long as you have a discrete carry and you are not among the 1% who get frisked then ceramic and plastic blades can make it through. I certainly don't recommend it , though I believe several people here or in other forums have mentioned they use fiberglass and ceramic neck knives for precisely this purpose.

You are reminding me of a comedian years ago (before 9-11) who said she always brings a bomb with her on the plane. Because after all, what are the chances of their being TWO bombs on the plane?

Similar logic to my own. For home defense, I use a flame thrower. ;)

I think it's already been pointed out that you could just use a sharp glass shard as a "terrorist knife." You could also hide a little razor blade on a keychain or something similar (keys go outside the metal detector)
