Have any of you ever done any work towards a knife build for someone who’s not a knifemaker?

I have a guy in my state that doesn’t make knives. He had a buddy waterjet some 4 blanks for him. Asked if I could grind the bevels. It quickly escalated to me doing the bevels, heat treat and a finish on the knife. He has a buddy that wants to do the handles. These knives are not to sell but gifts for family and a friend. Should I turn this away completely since I most likely can’t and don’t want to put my logo on it. Don’t want to because if the blade gets F’d during handle and or the handle work is crap I don’t want people thinking it was my work. The reason he asked me to do this is he wants as much work done from local people.

Thanks

I've finished blanks for people. I don't do it any more mostly because I don't want to. The only one I ever marked with my logo was the Becker BK9 blank I finished for a guy, since I knew exactly what it was and thought it was kind of neat to have my mark next to their roll stamp.

Outside of your marking concern I wouldn't have a problem doing what you're describing. I just don't want to do that kind of work.

Maineiac,
I have cautioned you about business related posts. You have to have a knifemaker membership to talk about orders, customers, sales, etc. Adding, "These will not be sold" doesn't make it a non-business topic if you are getting paid to do the work. Feel free to contact me with any discussion on this.
