Knife World Article on Camp Knives

I was about to post my opinion and then thought twice about it. After all, I have never met the man that wrote the article. I have met the gentlemen that made the knives. I would be honored to own a knife from any of them!
If I ever do get the chance to meet Beaucant, I will surely tell him what I think in my own Southern way.

Terry-

Very articulate, interesting, and respectable post.

I can see many points you brought up that most folks just wouldn't have considered. It's interesting and unfortunate that people seem to remember the few negatives from a situation so much more readily than the positives (no offense to anyone here, just human nature, I think).

Terry, I'm glad to have guys like you on my side of the friend and fellow bladesmith list :)

Terril,

nice photos !
As an editor, i would appreciate having some of them in my magazine. And you gave me an idea !
The best way to make everybody happy with a knife magazine is ...
Making one with no words about the knives and the knifemakers, and probably no words at all ! Only photos and ... ads !
And for sure : every knifelovers would be HAPPY.
Of course, We, modest writers, are useful, as long as we do write only what you are expecting to read !
But Terril, with such writers, people woul probably still assume, that our mother earth is FLAT !!!
Sorry, but this is my own southern way ... Too
(look at the map, I'm from Nice, France, and we are considered as Southern and special by the northern french people !)

I will never be happy with writers that are not willing to give the straight facts as they see them. I am free to agree or disagree with what they have written.

About that magazine with only pictures (I guess you need the ads for revenue).

A magazine with nothing but photographs....
I'd vote for that!
On second thought, even I would want to read something. What else could I bitch about?
What I like to see in an article is an objective view. Because something doesn't work FOR THE MAN WRITING, doesn't mean anything other than that. It may be perfect for the next man. I have watched a few cutting test. During these, little 98 lbs Dexter Ewing (sorry Dex) out did most in each try. That was with the same knfe. If Dexter writes that the knife was perfect and the other guy writes it wouldn't cut string, who is right? What damge can be done to the reputation of a knife maker because the second man didn't have the skill Dexter had?
"Causes blisters" That is about like saying a toad will cause warts. Poor use of a knife MAY cause blisters. Using a knife with a handle that does not fit YOUR hand MAY result in blisters.
What upset me about the writing was the apparent total lack of an objective view and the "tone" of I am THE expert. If it was due to the translation then it should have been corrected. If it was writen that way, it should have never been published.
FXS, please do not take this wrong. You may not understand but "Southern" is not a location. It is a way of life and a frame of mind.

No matter, Terill, "southern" is also a way of life in our "Old Europe".
In our magazine, i show more than i speak or write about. But sometimes, readers are expecting for an opinion, and of course, we are only able to give OUR opinion, and it's a fact that an opinion is always subjective. I can only speak about the honnesty of my friend Dominique, and i have seen him cutting easily three ropes with a brazilian camp knife, and a lot of famous knifemakers did see him cutting the rope without effort at the Albany Hammer-in (where mastersmithes failed the same day). He succeded last week to cut six ropes with a Shiva Ki "Gung ho" (article for Tactical knife), so be sure that he knows what he is talking about.
Testing knives is really a very delicate excercise, i would remember it !!

Have a nice sunday !
