Knife you love but never use

You probably know that knife- it’s one you love the idea of, love the look of, and you’re sure you could use it. You never do; always leaving it behind for another choice.

All of the knives in my collection of ~400 knives are those that I love and, while I know that I could use them, I never do.

On the other hand, I own many other knives outside my collection that I love & use and that I would never leave behind. 🤷‍♂️

I never use my stilettos but love them; stilettos are kind of useless knives that appeal more through novelty and history. You could also say I never actually use my balisongs because I have their blades taped up for flipping practice. My double edged OTF automatics don't see too much use because they're a pain to sharpen and illegal to carry in my state.

Ugh, looks like one of my knives will be added to this category if temporarily. I chipped the tip of my Seamus.

Lately I've found a new appreciation for toughness in a folder.

I have a custom Seamus Nor'Easter in M390 which I only use for light duty tasks, and since I got it 7 months ago I carry it a little less than once a week. I noticed a small chip at the tip of the blade, which makes no sense to me for how little and lightly I've used it, mostly cutting tape and plastic wrap.

S30V and M390 are the only steels I've had chipping issues with. This is the first m390 I've had this issue with.

I bought this 500 new in 1987, I think. My memory is unreliable. Then I carved a monogram in the handle and regretted it immediately. I carried it on a few memorable times including my wedding day. A lot has changed since then, so replacing the scales seemed appropriate. Now it seldom moves from its display.

I have quite a few that I love but never use. It doesn't help that my daily cutting needs tend to be few, as I've mentioned before in other threads. I'd daresay that out of my collection of hundreds of knives, there are probably seven or eight knives in total that look like they have any significant use on them, because those tend to be my dedicated box shredders or wood processing knives. The rest, most of them are taken out, admired, maybe carried for the day, and then placed back in their resting place and I won't see that particular knife again for awhile. Lately, most days, I carry my CruCarta PM2, because it's hard to really need much else. Saves the wear and tear on all my expensive knives!

Heh, some folks talking about "Use your knives!" As I'm sure many here could claim, I could carry a different knife every single day for over a year, and virtually all of them will look the same on the other end of it. Many of us own more knives than we'll ever use for the rest of our lives. I sometimes miss the days when my collection was small, because those knives were what I could afford and so by necessity I used 'em all. Fast forward to now, and it's hard these days to buy a nice knife when I know it's probably going in one of my knife chests for longterm storage several minutes after I've taken it out of the box and fondled it a bit.
