Well,

I am kind of new here and was wondering if anyone could recommend a quality, semi-inexspensive, knife that can be used for just about anything. I am kinda poor (i am a student after all) and love the outdoors and camping etc. and am wondering what kinds are available that fit the "everything" bill.
Thanks for your help.

i was asking this same question here are the knives i got recomended to me:

crkt m60
becker
benchmade

i didnt buy any of them i am planning on gettin a busse in the near future for outdoors.

one word: Victorinox

for general outdoors use, I'd suggest one of the lockblade models with a saw, such as the Rucksack, the One Handed Trekker or the Outrider... You'd be surprised how much you can accomplish with a good SAK...

What numberthree said . A sak is hard to beat for a all around outdoors knife . I favor the fieldmaster model myself .

Please tell us what "just about anything" means to you. Opinions vary. Some expect a knife to be used to baton through (split) hardwood. A SAK, and most every fiolding knife, is not optimal for such rough use.

Also, a little more definitiion of your budget would help those who will flock in to give advice.

mainly doing all sorts of outdoor activities...

using it..

chopping
sawing
cutting/slicing
peircing
etc...

i prefer fixed-blades myself, one that is durable and can take a beating... Ive had a few pocket knives before but the nut/bolt thing that holds each side together always breaks...

within the $100 price range... maybe a bit more

Well, I just read that post about the Air Force Survival Knife, an dthat sounds like a good buy. Im just a bit concerned about how durable it is and how it can be treated. Also, the CU/7 might be a good choice too.. but i am cheap...

***I guess Im going to have to go with the Air Force Survival Knife, but im not sure which manufacturer i should go with? Im thinking callimus but im not sure? what are your opinions?

BK7, BK 9, and one that has done fairly well on proving its self is the SOG Revolver. I thought it looked cheezy and cheap, but that last outing my brother was on, he said it worked like a champ (for its size).

You are welcome. I like to give credit were credit is due. Has there been any problems with the pivot point? That would be my only concern with that knife.

Tony, there has been zero problems with anything mechanical on the knife since production began. I did some pretty extensive testing with the knife before and after production began and it performed as you said, "like a champ".

I use mine constantly in the woods, cutting trees and many camp chores using the saw, it never ceases to amaze me.

Robbie Roberson ;)

Swamp Rat Camp Tramp.

$129, 7" blade, Risprene-C handle that is deet proof and absorbs impact when chopping.

Check it out here .

If you have $100.00 to spend, get yourself a SAK w/saw for 25.00 (I picked up a lockblade Hunter for less), a Becker C/U-7 for around $50.00 and a Sierra folding saw and still have enough left over for a couple of Hotsparks. :D

My 6th sense is telling me I'll get flamed for this, but what's wrong with Kabar?

I own a few, and have taken them to hell and back, the only real issue was I shattered the wooden handle on an older model in a bad throw.

Let's see,

Becker C/U-7 $50
12 Inch Ontario machete - $17
Frost's Mora SWAK - $10
SAK - $25 - $35

You can buy alot for a little over $100. These are the knives I use the most and they all work great. Mac

That's a lot of steel :D

I have been a fan of the Camillus Air Force Survival Knife for years, the design is showing its age these days, but is cheap as dirt, and will do the job.

Rainmaker's suggestion of the Becker Crewman goes for me as well. For the price, the Becker is an outstanding "general" camping knife.

Most of the fun is in shopping around, anyway :)
