Knife.....

First off where do you live...and where will you be outdoors?

I agree with all of the recommendations...

I would suggest you cannot got wrong with a victorinox SAK...carried one for year...never had a worry...and the saw works. I always get one with a philips head on it..just me..

If you wanna go cheap buy a SAK and a Tramontina machete...the machete will handle all of you heavy needs for most environment and shouldn't run you anymore than $10...prolly more like $5. You can sharpen them on a rock if need be...and you can shape the too large handle to fit you...and you won't feel bad if you wreck it...you'll have plenty of money left over to make a kydex sheath for it...

for that matter an small Estwing hatchet will fill the same bill

If you want a heavier camp knife...try the HI cantina...a daily special khukuri can go for as little as $50. And you cannot beat that for the money. You could have your SAK and a Khuk for less than a hundred bucks.

See if you can find a "villager" model. If you are handy you can play all sorts of custom games with your khuk. New Kydex sheath...change the edge geometry...lots of fun stuff...just ask any of the guys in the cantina for help...

SAK and a khuk covers you for everything...

Powells85,

My point being that you can get all your cutlery needs for under $100 and not have to suffer. I don't carry all these at once, but mixed and matched tot he task at hand they do just fine.

I don't begrudge anyone for laying out $150 plus for a knife. I would if I had money. I don't so I shop around. You don't have to go for the high dollar blades to be fully functional in the bush.

I carried a Ka-Bar for many years and it did just fine. I paid $34 for it and figured when it broke or wore out I'd get a new one. I finally retired it because it has so many memories attached I'd like to pass it on to my son. I replaced it with a $50 BK-7 and I'm happy with the choice.

I'd rather see a beginner develop real skill with whatever knife and only then lay out big bucks for quality steel. There's so many choices and types that it pays to have an informed opinion as to what you like and prefer in a balde before you go spending big money. Mac

I'd get the Cold Steel SRK for about $45 delivered from cheaperthandirt's website. The SRK is the best all-around hard use fixed blade out there for the money IMO.

My choice would be

Cold Steel SRK - $52.00 (wholesaleHunter.com)
Victorinox Hunter - $19.50 ("Buy it now" option at Ebay for the next 3 days)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=48821&item=6529167770&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW
Gerber Exchange-A-Blade - $16.00 (wholesaleHunter.com)
Cold steel Kukri Machete - $13.00 (wholesaleHunter.com)

With shipping this goes for around $128.00

If you are in the 'just one knife' approach, my personal order of preference would be:

Busse Camp Tramp ($129.00 Swampratknifeworks.com)
Cold Steel LTC Kukri ($82.00 cheaperthandirt.com.com)
Becker Brute ($74.00 Fernknives.com)
Busse Howling Rat ($89.00 Swampratknifeworks.com)
Cold Steel SRK ($52.00 wholesaleHunter.com)
Becker BK7 ($46.97 knivesplus.com)

If you want to go the Becker route, keep an eye on Ebay. I think with a little patience you might be able to get a becker for under $40 with shipping. I see a lot of bids start low over there, and end in the $30's. I got my Becker Necker there for Under $20 with shipping. Trying to do the same with a BK7 or BK10, but I have been out bid a few times.
I REALLY want to get a custom (linger) or a bark river in the near future though...

You're going to need a good fixed blade, I would go with either the Cold Steel Bushman or Kukri machete, for inexpensive knives. You're going to need a stout folder, I would go for the Kabar Dozier Hunter. I would also throw in a good, inexpensive SAK for good measure. You can order straight from Cold Steel or off of the forums or eBay for the Cold Steel stuff, same for the Kabar (except ordering from Cold Steel natch), and Walmart and Target have great prices for SAKs from Victorinox.

Or a multitool, SOG and Leatherman make some very good small cheap models.

No man, I wasn't disagreeing at all, I love knives as much as the next guy around here and seeing all those pieces of steel for $100 made me smile.

I agree that getting a variety of blades that aren't expensive to start out with is a good idea so that you can get an idea of what you want for a purpose and can get a more expensive piece.

actually that sounds pretty reasonable! I think im going to get paybe an AFSK and maybe a SAK too. It makes sense that you shouldnt spend alot of money on a knife. I think thats what Ill do. Which AFSK does everyone prefer? the camillus or the ontario?

well, im thinking i migh thave to go with the becker combat utility knife or the crewman utility knife. just wondering but what kinds of unpgrades/personalization things can you to fo one of those knives?

You will like either of the two. I own and use the BK-7 and it's a real deal blade. If I remember correctly, there are after market handle scales available for them. You can have a choil (?) cut. Get a replacement sheath. Add mini kit to the issue sheath as well as behind the handles scales. Wrap the handle, etc. Adding a good lanyard strap would be a good start. Not only will it aid in holding the blade securely to your hand, it give you a length of cordage.

Yea, people have told me that before. The clever guys at AOL are on to my tricks.

Basicly I was recommending a Frosts mora and one of the inexpensive import hatchets, for a total cost of around $15. The tools are plenty good enough to get you by until you have extra money for things like knives. In fact, they may be good enough in meeting his bladeware needs that he would decide to spend his extra money on girls instead!

I like the Mora knives. They are excellent working blades and the M2K is stout enough to do some bataning without damage.
