www.knifecenter.com is having a poll as to which is the most popular folder. When I voted, the results were 35+% for Benchmade and 25+% for Spyderco. All you Spydie fanatics need to get out and vote, both early and often, as they used to say in Cook County, Ill.

Hugh - popularity is nice, but not really as important as other measurments. We appreciate the effort, though.

Better to service few with Best Effort (Gambaru) than the many with less than same. Most important that we always do our best.

Also, this is an internet poll. The actual "real world" numbers say that Gerber and Buck are far more popular than Benchmade or Spyderco, or that Imperial Schrade is more popular than all of us.

Based on numbers that I've heard, the Chinese "knock offs" outsell us all, considering the extremely large "lower line" market.

Haven't we had Presidents that were "most popular" in the elections but not so successful in running a country.

Ferrari is certainly less popular than Corvette.

Just some thoughts to share.

It must be the night for me to comment. But what Sal just wrote is why so many of us like spyderco. I always say that quality beats cheap any day, just ask Mercedes how they are doing. I am glad to see that spyderco still does not see that being number one is not neccesarily mean selling the most knives. Having a good sound customer base that comes back for more may be more important for the longevity of the business than selling great quantities now. That is probably why, schrade, buck and gerber have done well many of their customers are repeats. I know that I have been

Sal, I did not mean to imply that Spyderco should enter a popularity contest, only that your many and vocal fans should be heard, and that in a light-hearted vein.

Hugh - I understand, and didn't take it in any other way. I thought to take the opportunity to share some of the core values of the company.

It's ok if The Gerber and Buck knives are in the top positions in some polls due only to volumes gained by sales in K-Mart,Walmart and other large discount stores.Because I wouldn't want the Spyderco line to suffer the concessions that would have to made to the quality of the products to allow them to be sold that way. I have no doubt that if the Spydies were put on the shelves of these stores that they would far out sell the other two.Probably both together. Also can you imagine how small the selections would be? Probably only two styles would be availible.Delica and Endura with combo edges only to reach the highest percentage of the market. We would see the end of waiting for the next newest really neat style to come out for our collections. We wouldn't be able to have a new most favorite knife to carry every month or so. Some times I can't wait for the next Blade show or issue of Blade Mag. or the James Mattis scans to get a glimpse of the newest Spydie that I might have a chance to get in a few months or so.Also mass marketing like that would be the end of neat speciality pieces, like the Starmates,BF Natives.Centofantes and so on.
Nope: I like it just the way it is. In my mind Spyderco is number one and it doesn't matter what any poll says.
