Okay, here I am checking my email and seeing what the latest news from bf is and i decide to cruise on over to knifeart.com only to see

Blocked by SurfWatch®

I am at the Boston Science Museum. Same message for arizonacustomknives and naturally knifeforums.com

These blocking programs are designed to filter out "porno" according to the museum director.... seems like they have blocked too much (or maybe somebody agrees that the amount I spend on custom knives is obscene!)

It's to block "violent content" most probably. These sheeple are still in the stone age. Unwilling to accept modern blades as working tools, but only as a weapon
eek.gif
. Instead of using blades, they resort to keys, sharp rocks, fingernails, and their teeth. I don't quite understand it myself. I feel they should devote an entire museum to these people. Actually, a zoo. Its entertaining to watch those uncultured savages.

There is another possible reason for that and it may not be what you're thinking. It involves the meta tags on the sites and not necessarily Surfwatch directly.

Websites that deal with weapons and survival are blocked by these programs. Supposedly to protect us from kids who download bomb making instructions off the internet.

I think I first read about it at AK-47.net or AR15.com. Somebody was complaining about the same inability to access the webpage because it was blocked by netnanny or some similar program. Since I don't have to worry about such programs I don't make it a point to remember the exact details. (How old are you?)

There is a reason why we are not blocked.

Mike, let me guess:

It has something to do with black helicopters. Either that, or you're in league with the devil.

Stop when you get to bone.

Actually it has to do partly with why we are listed so high in all the search engines. Over the years I have learned many secrets and tricks that get us listed very high on the search engines. Part of that has to do with building the pages properly and coding them properly. Sites that do not know how to do this loose out on a lot of traffic.

Part of the reason why we are the busiest knife web site is for the above. To give out that info would not be wise on my part
smile.gif

I am also a victim of my own expertise in this arena. More traffic, more bandwidth more $$$. Now I just have to turn the traffic into enough dollars to keep us alive. It is working.

Also if no one has noticed yet, should now see a icon that asks if you have any questions at the bottom of each screen. We are testing a beta version of new software that allows us to help anyone at anytime LIVE! It works great and it has a cool side feature that will allows us to pick a member at random to win a prize. The way it will work is we will put a graphic up on your screen. If you respond to it in time, you win! The graphic will actually be a link to a live chat session that we can do at anytime.

I will debut this soon so STAY TUNED!

Mike: This sight is blocked by websense (category : weapons) as is (for example) arizonacustomknives and many others. The humorous??? part is that the reason www.knifeart.com is blocked by websense is cited as "sex" ... I guess Larry has too many sexy knives on his site? You can go to http://database.netpart.com/site_lookup.html and put in the url to see if and why they block them... VERY frustrating. btw, you have to type in the http:// part

I looked up a few sites on that WebSENSE lookup link.

Playboy.com came up as "Adult Entertainment" - no surprise there.

Both www.knifeforums.com and www.bladeforums.com came up as "Weapons."

But www.knifeart.com is "Shopping" (not "Sex"!), and www.knifecenter.com is "Shopping."

However, www.knifeoutlet.com, www.nwcutlery.com, www.agrussell.com, and www.arizonacustomknives.com are "Weapons."

And www.benchmade.com and www.spyderco.com and www.chrisreeve.com are "Weapons," but www.coldsteel.com came up "Not Categorized."

The NRA (www.nra.org) came up as "Activist Groups." AKTI (www.akti.org) came up "Not Categorized."

My place, www.chaicutlery.com, got a long hesitation and then came back as "Travel."

So did www.williamhenryknives.com.

Go figure.

It turns out Surfwatch www.surfwatch.com has a place on their page for site testing. So I tested my site, and a bunch of other knife sites. If you're about sharp objects, you're banned. I guess they think BladeForums is blunt. They've even blocked Leatherman!
rolleyes.gif

And they've blocked my page. So I just e-mailed them at sites@surfwatch.com.

Out of curiousity, I checked out my web site, Chai Cutlery - http://www.chaicutlery.com
- on your "test" page, and found that it is blocked by your core filters. Please take a look at my site and tell me what on earth it is that you find there that impressionable minds should not be exposed to it. The products I sell are good and useful, and my site is informative and honest. I am annoyed and offended at being treated like a pornography or hate site.

Or is my site a "violent" site perhaps? Because I sell sharp obects? Please think for a minute. Without knives, we would have no clothing or shelter, and no food but what a baboon can eat as-is in a state of nature. But then maybe you think food preparation is
a subject too sensitive for young people, since you have blocked Lamson kitchen knives (www.lamsonsharp.com), as are minor mechanical repairs, as you have blocked Leatherman Tools (www.leatherman.com). Or maybe children should just be shielded from the knowledge that knives can cut things, if they haven't long-since gone into the kitchen and found out with their fingers.

Of course, I would not normally sell a knife to a child, but neither would an automobile dealer, and www.generalmotors.com is not blocked, though anything they sell is far far more dangerous than anything I sell.

If you do not want children to know about any Things That Can Hurt People, perhaps you need to reconsider any site that shows garden or construction tools, or maybe even sharp pointy ball point pens. I see that www.estwing.com is blocked by productivity filters, as is Amazon.com, but tell me what you might be able to do, if you were criminally angry, with this - http://www.estwing.com/geo3.htm - or maybe even this - http://www.estwing.com/hammer3.htm !!!

Again, please explain what it is that you find unwholesome about my web page.

[Unwholesome language deleted!]

The SurfWatch company's "sheeple" attitude that gets nearly all cutlery-related web pages, even Leatherman! lumped together with "www.sado-anarchist-madbombers.com" is a bigger problem than the blocking of my page in particular.

I'm sure they also block the most bucolic and wholesome gun pages too.

Watch out Mike. Here's a quote from Surfwatch:

SurfWatch criteria are reviewed with our Advisory Committee on a monthly basis to ensure responsible filtering. A site will
be blocked if it meets the following guidelines:

3.A site which publishes information on how to bypass SurfWatch filtering or render SurfWatch inoperable in a manner which violates the software license agreement or is otherwise unauthorized by the original purchaser of the software

I'd also suggest against "testing" sites on their web page. My guess is that every site you test goes onto their short list for review.

well on the bright side(sorta) whenever I bring home a knife magazine or a knives annual, my wife always says "ahh you're getting your porn fix, are ya?" I always say I just read the articles

Out of curiosity, I went to Net Nanny's site at www.netnanny.com and tried some knife sites against their "bad" list. My page, and Knifecenter, and Spyderco, and Benchmade, and Knifeforums are not on their list. I guess Net Nanny has decided it's OK for children to know that knives can cut things.

A quick check with the URLs for Smith & Wesson and Heckler & Koch shows that SurfWatch blocks gun manufacturers, and Net Nanny does not. I hope that anybody from Net Nanny reading this will see it as praise for their good sense, and not rush to correct their "error."

Well James, It looks like the "internet Big-Brothers" must have found out about that new knife you were gonna stock. You know.... The MicartaAuto Titanium Talonite Individual Steak knife.
eek.gif
Better known as the MATTIS!!!

I was afraid that the sheeple wouldn't go for you slicing up poor defense-less steaks with something as evil as that.

Better luck next time...
