I really thought hard before posting this. I started a thread here http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1029928-Watch-your-CC after I had someone try make a charge to my Pay Pal debit card. I was up late last night trying to go over any possible place that I had used my CC that may have been hacked. The only place in the last 2 or 3 months at least that I used my CC online was knifekits.com. I still did not want to post as I am not 100% sure it was from the knifekits site. I did a search last night by typing " Credit Card problems at knifekits " in Google and found a thread about it on another forum. After that I thought I should just in case they do have a problem with the system.
I had a very low balance in my PP so the 900.00 charge was denied and I wasn't out anything except the time and trouble of getting my card cancelled and a new one on the way.
I have ordered from them several times before with nothing but the best service and no problems at all.
Has anyone else had anything like this happen with them?

What a hassle.Doesn't paypal tell you who attempted the charge?Hope you can dig out the crook.Im sure knifekits is a honest company, but many individuals may have access to the accounts.

Pay Pal said it was an online attempt at the charge. I do not know if they try to run IP addresses to track them down or not. Seems if they were trying to buy airline tickets they would have had to enter a name.

Many times, a CC is compromised by *over the phone transactions*.

All the needed info (unencrypted) is freely given to a virtual stranger. Many times around Christmas, the person on the other end is a temporary worker filling in.
No technical savvy needed to *hack* the account.

Happens more than many folks would believe...

3rd party payment processors and Secure Browsers make real hacks much more difficult. And usually never for less than $1000's...

I entered my info through the checkout system on their website.

No other checkouts anywhere else in the past month? No phone/CC transactions over the Christmas Holidays for Family presents or bill paying?

Just trying to help. Fraudulent use of CC's affects us all in the end. Glad yours was detected...

No,one of the reasons I posted this.I use that card very little online (mostly for places that do not have pay pal check out). The most I slide it is at the Post Office,Wal Mart and a couple gas stations and those have scanners I slide myself, the cashier never handles the card.

Don't know if this relates to your issue or not but it seems worth mentioning.

I wanted to but a few things from that site last month. I browsed around, added them to my cart, went to the checkout and then my browser displayed a message saying the connection to site was untrusted. Specifically...

You have asked Firefox to connect securely to knifekits.com, but we can't confirm that your connection is secure. Normally, when you try to connect securely, sites will present trusted identification to prove that you are going to the right place. However, this site's identity can't be verified.

More details said the site used an invalid security certificate.

I thought about going ahead with the order but I had no experience shopping there before and for $20 worth of stuff was it really worth the risk in case there was a legitimate problem? I decided not to place the order.

Did you get any such message when you made your order?

Hello Everyone,

My name is Steve Andrews. I am the general manager of CKK Industries, Inc. (www.KnifeKits.com). One of our customers sent me a link to this thread this morning and I thought I should respond. I want to start by saying that I am sorry that your credit card number was stolen. We are serious about taking care of our customers and about credit card security. Anytime you have a problem or even think you may have a problem with KnifeKits.com, please call us up and ask for me personally.

That being said, I can give you some information about how we protect credit card information. We do not store or even see credit card information when an order is placed via our website. When a customer enters it into the payment form, it is transmitted directly to Authorize.net via high grade encryption. This means that when you place an order, the information is encrypted and sent directly from your browser on your local computer to Authorize.net for processing. At no time is any information, not even the expiration date stored anywhere by us.

I do have a couple of recommendations that may help you track down the problem.

First, check with any place that you have used your credit card in the past few months. Find out if they store the credit card information. If they do, that is a potential problem because if they get hacked, your information can be compromised. Since we do not store the information, you will never have that problem with us.

Second, if you use ATM's or pay at the pump, your card may have been skimmed. Just Google "credit card scam at gas pumps." It is scary.

Lastly, and probably least likely, check your computer for a key logger or other malware. If your computer gets infected with a key logger, it allows the crooks to track your keystrokes and you would never know it.

Thanks,
Steve

I don't know if it was a key stroke recorder or not.If it was I would think they would have gotten my pay pal and bank passwords as well.
I also ran a full system scan on my lap top with nothing found.
I do not use it at gas pumps and it has also been a long time sense I used it at an ATM.I really wish I could pin point where the info could have been stolen.
Like I said in the first post I am not sure if it was through knifekits or not, just seemed strange that it happened right after placing an order and then seeing others post about it as well.
I was planning on calling you tomorrow.I should have known that most places are open today and called this morning.
Again for everyone,I have ordered several times before with nothing but the best service and super fast shipping, only reason I brought knifekits up was because of seeing similar problems posted elsewhere.

Mr.Andrews,a quick question? Is there anyway you can set up a pay pal checkout on your site. That way no CC numbers have to be entered. Not sure how the pay pal check out works as far as security for the pay pal password but at least the password can be changed easily.

We no longer accept PayPal as a form of payment due to the fact that they are against our industry. They are anti-gun and knife and they attempt to control what type of items can be sold on websites that accept PayPal as a form of payment. They contacted us with a long list of items they wanted removed from our website in order to continue doing business with them. Most of the items were our various knife kits, and that was unacceptable for us.

Wow- Thanks to Knifekits for giving a damn! This is honorable for you to even post on this matter. I have never been or even heard of Knifekits.com--- I will look you up before my next purchase.

I can understand that. I would not do it either if I had a business and they want to control what I sold.

Always wondered where that option went, makes sense now.
Thanks for chiming in and welcome to bladeforums Steve! Will be placing an order on your site soon.
