So, my folks have been asking about what I want for my 25th. One stipulation exists "Nothing that could be considered by a 'normal person' to be a weapon". My folks know me too well as that I have watched the History Channel and the Discovery channel to the point where I can turn a pair of underwear and a roll of newspaper into a crossbow (Thank you Mythbusters).

No 1911 slides, no Finnish Mausers, no Kuks, no scandinavian blades to assemble. "Why?" you ask. Because they said so.

Regardless of this yall have to remember that I have a box of blades I still have to assemble that just got back from Paul Bos, and a few 1911 slides that need to be fitted to frames I have set aside for them.

So, if yall were in my position what would yall ask for?

surefire flashlight? They'd be on shaky groud but I guess they could say its a "light weapon". As long as you don't get the one with the sharp chisel like scalloped out edges on it (my favorite!) you won't violate their rule.

Nice to see you posting more Dave--you were missed:)

"Nice to see you posting more Dave--you were missed"
It feels good to be missed. I have been on lurker status for awhile now. Being that I have some spare time now I can hang around some and talk.

I think I may need to ask for a Motherboard and some quality ram to go with it. Then borrow a buddies camera and a lightbox and take some pics of some of the goodies I make in my spare time.

Of course those M39's yall have been posting about sure are pushing my button.

"Go for a car!" Yeah... well... If I could ask for that I think I would rather ask for a down payment on a house. Forget the furniture, I would tear out the carpet and start building an central air conditioned and heated shop. Lathes, end mills, forges, steel and wood bandsaws....you name it... entertaining for non knife folk would be interesting, but really who cares about them?
There would be plenty of room to store barstock and handle material as well as all those "projects" that you never seem to finish.

Perhaps I should ask for cash and invest in the lottery.

Dremel set, dentist drills, books on scrimshaw and carving.

Stuff for a lifetime of craftsmanship.

A forge, hammer, anvil and miscellaneous sundries...and some wrought iron. You can make some wrought iron yard clutter and then "discover" the other possibilities.

So when is your 25th, Dave? Heber and I have ours 25th on Friday the 24th. I'm kind of with you on not knowing what to ask for. Actually, I got myself a b-day present with the Munk Chunk Cleaver last month. More than anything I just want a weekend with NOTHING going on. No projects, no guests, no calls, no dinner dates, no nothin'. A weekend for me to sit around, watch TV, catch up on some video games, and just be the most vegging veg in the world.
Happy Birthday:)

Jake

Best gift my parents could give me is the one they've already given me, their love.

Belay Long John, if we murder the bilge rat, who'll be left to care for fuzzy little kittens and such? Don't want that on my conscience when I go to Davy Jones. :p :D

I think you ought to ask for a fly fishing rod and a fly-tying kit.
(and some instructional videos)
I never thought I'd like that, but I tried it and I LOVE it.
(of course, FISH will consider that a weapon of mass destruction)

OR, ask for a flint-knapping kit and some stone to practice with.
(of course, you can make weapons with that kit...)

I have thought of the anvil, however that is a plan that goes with a house of my own. I can see myself backing in a truck load of charcoal attempting to explain what I am doing to my folks, although it does sound pretty cool. As for a weekend of absolutely nothing, I am currently unemployed and living off of what I saved up trying to decide the ultimate question. "What do you want to do when you grow up?" Doing nothing is absolutely great, but even that costs money.

I asked my 60 something year old barber and he said, "Why the #$%^ would somebody want to grow up?". I tend to agree.

The only "social activity" I have arranged for next week is Lunch with a professor that I picked up at my sister's college. I got the hots for teacher.

I have the fly-tying kit and have been tying since Jr. High. The rod money keeps being depleted on Kuks, Firearms, and ammo. I guess I haven't told yall about my 30-06 with the Ziess Conquest 3x9 with 50mm obj lens have I? I only have 22 rounds through it and am already placing rounds ontop of each other at 100 yds. I'm going to need to start practicing at longer range.

I have taken some lessons on flycasting from my Uncle, but only enough to get myself into trouble.

Oh yeah. I turn 25 on the 23rd of Feb, and I think I need to go get my X-box out of storage.

Sarge ? That was my first laugh of the day !

Well birthday boy why not some nice Japanese waterstones ? I don,t know if thats your cup of tea . (oolong for me please ! )
If not then perhaps some chisels or some of the nice japanes tools we,ve seen on here of late .
No matter what and no matter when ? Happy birthday!!!!!!! !! ! !!!! !!! !! ! !

Jake and Dave, happy Birthday!! incase I'm to busy on mine. lol.... I am not asking for anything this year, if my family wants to give me stuff they can. I'm Throwing a Camp Cooking themed Pot Luck dinner and inviting my whole apartment complex. There are lots of great guys and Galls here, so it should be fun. Took all of Friday off to cook and goof off. Got my self a new knife and computer upgrades. So spending time with friends and family is plenty for me. Though I won't turn anything down. ;)

Happy birthday SamuraiDave. I agree its good to see you posting again. As a newb I have guilt when the old forumites stop posting. Is it me? Funny for me to call you old. You're younger than my wife even. Twenty-five seems like eons ago. Still I ain't hit 35 yet, so I still got some life left in me. Have fun on your birthday. How bout a trip to Las Vegas as a present?

Happy Birthday Dave! Well, if you have blades coming from Mr. Bos that means that you are doing stock removal. I second the gentlemen that say smithing equipment, and I say to start with this DVD http://www.livelyknives.com/knifemakingvideo.htm. When I started out in the 80's I thought that I needed every tool under the sun. Don't believe it! Look at what the kamis, the panday in the PI, and all the other smiths in the 3rd world make due with! Oh yeah, you won't need a whole truck full of charcoal either. A couple of 40lb bags of lump charcoal from a restaurant supply house (cheaper than at the store) will get you going good. I buy mine direct from Lazzari Fuel for about $12 for 40lb mesquite, little more for oak. And you can barbeque with it too! Keep some hot dogs handy on a stick, and when the folks come outside, thinking that you are making sharp pokey things, roast them one up to distract them!

My parents are the same way. They try to keep anything weaponlike as far away from me as they can. Kinda like people do with an alcoholic in the family. In honor of that my wife gets me a gun or a knife for every holiday.:D

First thing that came to my mind was tools and hiking supplies. I'm in constant need of belts, grinders, cutting bits, hammers, clamps, saws, drills, etc.

If not that then stuff for good ole hiking. A decent MSR Whisperlite stove, a water purifier, a decent little hydration pack, etc.

When all else fails, I ask for gift certificates... from the sporting goods store or hardware store which I quickly convert into weapon obtaining or crafting one way or the other.....:D

Hey, Dave! Good to see you.

I kinda like good flashlights as gifts, whether receiving or giving.

Of course, smaller flashlights can be used as eda/etta koppo, and larger ones are impact tools...

John

Likewise, Happy Birthday, SD.

Need to show your avatar around here more often.

Ammo isn't a weapon... per se. :foot:

Amazon.com gift certificate?
