Knifemaker crowdfunding his dog's surgery?......

A little too specific a focus on a particular person, imo. I'm having a hard time figuring out what this thread is really about, since I think that the topic of crowd funding for the artist's emergencies could be fair game for conversation without bringing specific people into it.

And then judging a specific person's actions on a forum with a global audience, ie; whether or not they should put their dog down...frankly, that seems profoundly disrespectful, and downright mean, to me. It might be good advice generally, but in the context being created here, well...I dunno.

I really don't like this thread at all, which is why I'm posting in it. I think it's in bad taste and doesn't represent anything that is close to what I feel is best about this forum.

No disrespect to you, Steven. I think I know where you're coming from. I'd just like to point out that you could have attracted a much better conversation by incorporating a more nuanced approach. Who knows? I may yet stand corrected.

I think it is an okay topic for the knife forum. It is the knife community that is helping out. I always try to do my part to help out other makers whenever I can. I can see how this conversation could go bad though. I mean what if you guys start getting taken advantage of? That would be terrible, because it might make you like knifemakers and knives less. Which is why in a way I think this is a good thing to converse about.

If nothing else crowdfunding shows how much we all care for those makers. High much we care about the well being of them, their lively-hood, and pets. It is a community and that is what this is suppose to be about. Supporting one another.

That being said, even if I burned my shop to the ground or something happened to my pet. I would just sell knives to pay for it, rather than ask for help. I can also be hard headed. That being said, people randomly donate money to me for no reason at all. They just simply want to help and be a part of things.

However, don't judge me if you see a gofundme page when my car breaks down and I need a new one, but don't want to pay for it myself. :p I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that. But, come on...you were thinking it. ;)

P.S. This is all in fun. Don't hate me.

Hey Lorien,

You wouldn't be the first person to say that I might be stating something in bad taste.

The reason that you are having a hard time figuring out what this thread is about is that it isn't clear.

Usually, when I post up, I have something specific to say....a position.

I don't HAVE a position on this....I have said what I would do, how I feel about my animals.....but I don't even know how I feel about ANY knifemaker or collector for that matter that I know asking people for money for something other than replacing a shop or crucial piece of equipment.

There is no mean-spirit to it at all, but rather, massive confusion. Was kind of hoping as a group consciousness, we could "talk it out". Maybe it was a bad idea, not sure.

Logan speaks above about what line is appropriate for crowdfunding. I don't even have the faintest. Usually, like in Kickstarter, you are investing in something directly and get something directly back. When my wife makes microloans on Kiva, she usually gets paid back. What is the rationale behind something like GoFundMe?

I have to agree strongly with Ben here. If one were to discuss crowdfunding or more specifically, knife makers using crowdfunding for specific purposes, that could be relavant here. Dragging Nick into this, and subjecting him to the potential negativity that could come with it seems, well, insensitive, in an already trying situation. Yes, there is the provided link so people can donate if they want. On the the other hand there is talk of putting dogs down and shooting them in the head, no owner wants to hear that when doing every thing they can for a close friend.

I've been following some of Nick's posts (elsewhere) and a few of the contributors/well wishers have related very successful, long term results for their Newfies having had the procedure Nick is seeking.

I'm a sensitive child, I know. But this feels more like an outward smile and well wishes with a darker, "let's see what poison arises" kind of post. Mike

I understand how Nick feels, I have had sick pets and have lost pets as well, the crowd funding is fine. But what I don't know is why was this brought here in Customs & Handmade's Knives? Wouldn't this be more appropriate in Community Center?

Does anyone know who Nick Wheeler is in Community? Would they be predisposed to help there? That is why IT is here.

The "crowd funding is fine" in what sense?

Anyway, this might have been a bad idea, so I'll lock it.....'scuse the heck out of me for trying to understand something!
