No kidding! This is just to link to this thread on another forum to see what our local metalurgists think of this. It's WAY over my head, but from the look of it he sure tripped over something cool....

Well Deker, I know Jerry and I've known about that steel for a while .Yes he did make it in his back yard ,I've seen the videos and it looks like Mt St Helen erupting again !! To explain in layman's terms - those worms are eating the little squares of intermetallic compounds.

...and when they're done eating what steel will we have?

In all seriousness though, what I'm trying to grasp here is what the properties of this steel are. If I understand it correctly, he's made something else that maintains an austenitic structure at room temp. Does that mean it'll have corrosion resistant properties similar to other austenitic steels, or is that from all the Cr/Ni/etc in those alloys? I also understand that it may be hardenable through nitriding (very cool, but I imagine not very practical for most of us). Is it really just a kind of eco-friendly-tough-steel?

Either way I think it's great that the little guy came up with something truly new in this day and age. That's a rare and very special occurance nowadays.
