Also tact, respect, and a good attitude.

Thank you Darrin for your insight. If that is your picture, you appear to be a very tactful and respectful person with a good attitude. Carry on!

Interesting... So, if a person were to design and draw a blade, start with a piece of barstock, profile, bevel, heat treat, finish grind and attached a handle to it, that person would not be considered a blademaker and/or knifemaker? I must be missing something big here but I don't know what it is.

Knifemaker imo. As long as you are not buying kits and thowing handles on, thats assembler or handle maker. Never heard of blademaker.
Bladesmith involves smithing obviously. What if you are making a sword? do the titles need to change? How about a fork or scissors?

Cutler is a nice term and encompasses all.

I like Whisky too.

its really to bad that you are better than everyone on this forums. there are people here who have been making knives longer than my father has been alive. To come on here with such an attitude is really unprofessional and does not reflect the professional back ground that you claim to have. as a navy corpsman I deal with marine officers all day and have never met one who is as immature as you are right now. I also know many special operators, my grandfather is a retired green baret and one of the most upstanding men I have ever met and he would never act in this mannor. Personally I have several friends who are navy seals and they are some of the most professional people I have ever met. Im not saying that you have never done anything that you said you did, but I am saying that it is not reflected in your actions that you are who you say you are. I also know that I can prove my credencials farly easily and quickly, and I will hold my reservations about who you say you are untill I see some verifiable evidence.

I didn't plan on posting in this thread, but that's a great analogy Ryan......especially since I like whiskey:D

Who doesn't? Another one of my vises!

Thank you for your opinions. It appears there is no "simple" answer to my question. I don't even know if what has been writter here could be called a consensus.

It's arcane

In 1996, I was awarded the South Carolina State Folk Heritage Award.
They were having a problem finding a classification for me since I used Blacksmithing techniques to make knives, but I was not really a Blacksmith in the true sense of their definition. So, I basically told them that a Bladesmith was a Blacksmith who specializes in making cutlery and cutlery related items. They were happy with that definition.

I agree... whiskey is good. I'm especially fond of Candian Whiskey. The odd thing about that is I grew up in Tennessee, so you'd expect me to prefer sour mash. It's okay... but my sweet tooth prefers the Canadian touch.

Ever try Pendelton? MmmmmMMMmm... good whiskey. Black Velvet is good too.

if you can start with this

and end up with this
attachment.php

then you are a knifemaker.

If you work at a Jiffy Lube running a cash register and once (or maybe even twice) someone let you go out and change oil on a car, are you a cashier or are you a service technician?

If you're a printer support tech and you managed to fix a friend's computer, are you a PC tech or are you a printer support tech?

If you're a reservist captain in the infantry and you went to Ranger school are you an SF commander or an infantry captain?

If your main hobby (or job) is finishing kit knives and then you make one or two knife shaped objects are you a knifemaker or are you a kit finisher?

I like to think people can change and I was hopeful when he first posted. But his reply to Darin proved that this is useless folks. Please let it go.

Most feel that knifemaker or bladesmith is an earned title.

The same with many other titles.

Doing something a couple times doesn't confer the title.

I've put in a couple toilets and sinks. I am not a plumber.

I've changed the spark plugs, oil, and even done some more technical auto repairs. I am not a mechanic.

I've built a new wall in my shop. I am not a construction worker.

I've painted quite a few walls. I am not a painter.

Reminds me of that old joke.
You can bang a thousand women, but, you suck one c**k, you're forever a c**ksucker...

I think this guy is addicted to being an annoying, trolling, fool in online forums. We are once again feeding that addiction. Type all you want, nothing is going to fix this guy except a physical lesson and that probably wouldn't even do it. I get the feeling that he's just doomed to be this kind of person. We should feel sorry for him. And ignore him.

He has become a legend in his own mind.

This is easy, Bladesmiths do not have hair on their forearms and are generally much better looking than the others........Randy

yep, It's everyone else, not him. I'll bet he's looking in the mirror right now and telling himself how smart he is.
