just by chance I met a man named Jerry Fowler the other day. He is a farrier from South Carolina who makes great knives out of damascus. We got to talking and he started showing me his blacksmith shop and some knives. He was great to talk to, he answered every question about forging damascus and grinding knives. he offered to let me come hang out and learn anytime i wanted. I am so excited, I have all the tools my grandad had when he blacksmithed some so i'm gonna set it all up in my shop next week and start learning to forge. and so the obsession with knifemaking just got worse. I can't believe people are so willing to help, including everyone on here. as soon as i get my forge and other stuff set up i will post pics.:)

its really cool you have tools that have been in your family. good luck with the obsession/illness. :)

I agree with Lou. I also think you'll find that the more you hang around knifemakers, the more you'll realize that they're some of the best folks in the world. I know that I owe the quality of my work and the speed with which I've gotten to this level to many great makers. A good number of them I met here on BF. Take any opportunity to learn with anybody you can. Everybody has something to teach.

We have a 12 step program to help you through your addiction. Just come to one of the Georgia Custom Knifemakers' Guild meetings and meet a bunch of fellow addicts.
You will meet makers of every persuasion and every skill level, as well as collectors, leather craftsmen, engravers, schrimshanders, etc. This is the way to network with others in the trade. You can learn so much and get answers to all your questions and help with all your problems. I highly reccommend giving us a visit. Check our website out for meeting information www.gerogiaknifemakersguild.com , we have a meeting coming up Feb 2nd. in Statesboro.

I also organize and co-conduct two (spring & fall) hammer-ins each year at the Trackrock Campgrounds in Blairsville. These are open to the public and and a lot of fun. If interested contact me via PM and I'll supply you with more detailed information.

It's great that you got some good exposure through Jerry. Met him once, a good while back, really nice guy. Very talented. There are plenty of makers here in Georgia that can and will help you as well.
