knifemaker?

I see it says 'knifemaker' under your name Steve. Is there some reason why you would not make your own knife to carry?

DO NOT read anything into this, I am very curious as to how many knife-makers carry knives they have made themselves and why a knife-maker would pay someone to make him a carry knife. I can understand a maker buying another's for his collection but shouldn't a maker be carrying his own work if he expects others to have confidence in the workmanship?

Only questions here and nothing more................

Legitimate question. In fact, I am suprised no one mentioned it earlier...:footinmou

I have just started making knives, and I haven't even finished my first piece. Granted, I could make myself one to my own specs, but it will be a while. At this point, I have no way to properly heat treat the blade. I plan on doing it myself, so I can't really complete anything until I buy more equipment.

Besides, I figure there is nothing wrong with supporting another knifemaker. ;)

Well that makes sense. Good luck on making and selling your first of what hopefully wil be many;)

thank you everyone for your kind comments. crayola, thanks for the ballpark breakdown of costs - it does give me a good perspective of the material costing.

I've always appreciated craftsmanship, which does have monetary value, apart from artistic, of course. when I first posted, I had no idea that the basic costs would be quite substantial. However, I'm glad that some mentioned that it IS POSSIBLE to get customs at my original price range, but not S30V. Thanks, that and the subsequent comments are really more helpful to a newbie like me than  words (no offense intended haha :) ). I do really want a S30V fixed blade wif my original specs for under $150, so if you know of knifemakers (or are a knifemaker) who would be willing to consider, please let me know....

Epsilon, I do like your convex ground blades very much, especially the simple kotaganas (the bar-like chisels)?

I shall follow-up with the Don Crockett lead - I like his Eaglets very much.

Any other knifemakers?

Thanks heaps!

Spyken

I haven't got it yet, but I've heard his work is top-notch. Good luck :)

I just checked out the link to your custom knife, Wow!
Please let us know what you think of the knife when you get it.

With prices like that I may even be able to aford a custom knife some day :)

 What can I say that hasn't already been said. You just need to save up some more money for a quality custom, its that simple:)

Ok, now I see. We're not just talking about a piece of steel and a couple pieces of micarta, all the expenses. Do we include the power bill, telephone and garbage?

Absolutly, a knife maker is a business. Just like any other business the price of his product must cover all consumables, materials, GA, Overhead and of course a profit. If these guys don't make a fair return for the manhours spent then they cannot stay in business.

I would hesitate to guess the average wage when all expenses are duducted, a knifemaker realizes at the end of the day.
