hope its okay to post this here...

but I just wanted to give all the bladesmiths, knifemakers, and the occasional spark throwers a heads up...

don't want to violate any rules here so I won't name names, but will say a couple years ago I was 'literally' ripped off by a very well known daddy host for close to $300 just because I apparently clicked a button.. (that was for my primary business website)..

so I've been Leary ever since, well although my site technically isn't even functioning yet I have had the domain for over a year, and I just paid for hosting and everything over two months ago..

I checked my paypal account and noticed over $100 withdrawn from my very own host... after the fact I've already paid them, anyhow I'm not even sure how they got my paypal account as I paid them and have only paid them with a Credit Card...

I put in a claim with Paypal over a week ago to dispute the charges, and they were finally reversed today....

even this new hosting company is trying to rip me off !!! whats the dealio??

BEWARE!!!! and check your CC and PP accounts for these rip offs !!! its apparent they all do it, or at least the 2 I've used have.. .

Make sure you didn't double pay by your own mistake. Most of the billing from these companies is automated. If you pay with a CC and then choose Paypal, it may turn out to be a mistake on your part. Did you contact the hosting service? If you did and they weren't ready to clear things up, I'd be pissed too. Sorry to hear. I am with one of those "patriarchal" hosts but it is HostPapa and I don't think you are talking about them.(GoDaddy is a well known provider. My BIL is a supergeek and corporate IT for a major banking institution. He recommends GD as a web hosting service) One thing I NEVER do, is select the automatic payment option.

Log onto Paypal and be sure to check your subscribtions... I found a couple sites that I haven't logged onto for years still attempting to draw a membership fee.

Good to know, thanks! We've just recently started a website for T.M. Hunt's knives with the "Dada". I'll forward this link to our site administrator Diesel D.

Not recently but in past years I've had a few different websites and was lucky enough not to get ripped off. Mostly I hosted with major web hosting sites and paid a few extra dollars instead of going with smaller hosts who often run into overhead cash issues.

it was godaddy originally and apparently my mistake as somehow when I opened this old site I clicked automatic renewal... well I had already dissolved the domain and they still deducted from my account, it was a very lengthy battle that ended up costing me around $260.. this was around 6 yrs or so, they weren't helpful whatsoever and my CC company had no choice but to pay them for services I clearly could never use as I had no site !!!!

Rick the latest problem may have been some double payment deal and you're probably right, I have yet to contact them but they didn't fight it..

from now on I guess I'll have to read through the "terms and conditions" before I just get click happy..

As was advised before, I never do auto renewal. I want to be personally involved in all renewal decisions... at the domain and hosting levels. I own and operate several web sites, some free, some not. All on godaddy. I've been happy enough to use them exclusively for several years now. You do have to watch out for the upsells... especially now. Always look for the "No Thanks" button, never just click the Continue button without checking what's pre-clicked by default. Do that and you'll find they offer good value for the money. Get careless with the clicks and you'll be paying for a lot of crap you don't need.

I have been unpleasantly surprised on more than one occasion with more than one host provider at the unprofessional lack of communication when it comes to their annual fees. If you don't select auto-renew you are just as likely not to be notified of a pending renewal date so you can "manually" make payment. I have been locked out of sites on such occasions when they don't get renewed. Domain name registration can be even more tricky in such cases when payments are not made and they expire. Another unfortunate scenario can be when your email address changes as the years tick by and notification never end up reaching you.

Managing cyber accounts can get tricky. One has to create new kinds of info-recording account-management payment-tickler-tracking systems to stay on top of things. Heck, just remembering ADMIN login IDs, passwords and site control-panel URLs can be a challenge!

Host Gator FTW
I've used them for a long time and have nothing but good to say about them. On the rare occasion I have a problem it's never been their fault and they have always been very helpful sorting it out. They're one of the least expensive for standard hosting while offering some of the best accounts and service. They also notify me well in advance of any renewals and then again as it gets close. No confusion, no spam, just polite reminders of when I need to renew to maintain that particular account. Handy, since I have several domains through them, one hosting account for myself and one I manage for a customer, plus a lot more domain names for that customer.

I too have been ripped by go daddy in the past. I will never do business with them again.

When I started putting together my current website I did a search for ratings and reviews. From pretty much everything I found it comes down to host gator and namecheap. I use namecheap and am very happy with them, and they are pretty cheap.
