Knifemaker's Block

I don't remember if Vulcan was a Roman or Greek god, but in the U.S he resides in Birmingham, Alabama. He stands atop the WPA pedestal in Vulcan Park.

He was created by master sculptor, Giuseppe Moretti.

I've had the same problem and finally figured out what it is for me at least. I was trying to make knives as good as other people do and just couldn't do it. I was very discouraged and had to do some soul searching. I decided to make something that was in my own mind. We are artists and should make the things that satisfy our natural calling. God gave us this gift and we are wasting it following somebody else. The reason why their knives come out so good are because it was their dream. We have our own dreams so lets fulfill them.

If we make something nobody else makes no one can say it isn't correctly done.

We should all print that and make a plaque out of it and hang it on the shop wall!
That is a grand statement Bruce!!!

Your talent is God's gift to you. What you do with it is your gift back to God.-- Leo Buscaglia

L6steel, I like Bruce's comments too. When I first read them, I was reminded of that Buscaglia quote you use in your signature. (I knew I saw it somewhere around here). I think they go together like bread 'n' butter. :)

Bruce, I think thats a great mindset!

Your quote, is reminiscent of a statement by John Shelby Spong, that I have always found inspiring:

" To have the courage to be oneself

To claim the ability to define oneself

To live your life in freedom and with power

Is the essence of the human experience"

I have this posted in my shop and classroom both, Fred

Aaahhh Birmingham. I miss that city. I love when we pass through. Thanks for posting pics of the Vulcan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Knifemaking is supposed to be the 'escape' from all the other crap going on. If you have ten unfinished blades, maybe you need some handle challenges. Inlay? Multiple materials? Engraving? New matrials? Sheaths?

How 'bout making a knife for Zoe? Now theres a niche market that would sell BIG!

If you can make it to Ed's in June, that is always a big re-charge to any knife maker's battery.

Rob!

Ray, just a funny side-note. Tom Ferry and I stayed at that very same dive about 5 years ago!!! First year I went to the MT show we drove over and stayed there. That guy with the arm sure seemed unhappy!!! Hopefully his new one has perked him up a bit.

It was a good jolt for Tom and I too.

Nick, You don't know how lucky I felt coming home after my tour in Nam with all my parts. If it wasn't for the malaria I got over there who knows my brain would have been normal and I wouldn't have gone down the the bladesmithing road.

The young fellow at the motel still looked unhappy to me and like he hadn't totally adjusted to the new arm. If it were me I'd still be pissed.

Since driving threw Montana I have now been thinking about doing the MKA Show just to see more of the county there. We cut across just north of Great Falls heading west on 200 to Missoula. That was the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen.

The Charles Russel museum in Greatfalls is a great place if you are ever in the country again. I will be headed that way memorial day weekend. My brothers and sisters all meet on the Missouri river where it enters Fort Peck resevior every spring. I have 5 sisters and 4 brothers and with kids its a big group. It is a great country and so is the lower Yellowstone river country in southeastern Montana were I grew up.
