Knifemakers in Everett, Washington area

Hello all.

I was wondering if there are any knifemakers in the vicinity of Everett, Washington that might have a few hours to let a newb watch them work.

For the past year or so I have had the knifemaking bug... but I tend to approach these things in a "cart-before-horse" manner. So Rob's recent holiday sale inspired me to buy a KMG grinder (which is currently in my "paint shop" :D) but should be all assembled in a week or so. So now is when I acknowledge that I really have no idea how to grind. I think that the last time I ground out a knife I was 12-years old.

So... anyone in the area willing to let me be a fly on the wall... get me started on the right foot with these KMG-type grinder thingies? :D

Lyle Bronkhorst is in Bothell, at the country village. Tom Ferry, ABS Mastersmith is in Auburn, and I think Bob Cramer, ABS Mastersmith is in Seattle. Go to a Barnes & Nobles and find a copy of Knives 2009...in the back you will find a listing of knifemakers by state. Just about anyone who is serious about knifemaking is listed in there.

I am about 2-2.5 hours (in good traffic, HA!) south of you. Well, south of Olympia traffic actually is good. My sister lives in down town Seattle, so I know all too well how a 5 mile drive can take over an hour up there.

I'm going to have a couple guys from the welding program at school come up weekend after next. That's the tentative plan anyway... I've got three grinders and two of them look just like that one at your house. It's easiest for me to coordinate visitors in a little gang of two or three, as I don't get much time in the shop these days.

Let me know if you'd like to come down and hang out for the day. :) (email is in my profile).

I live in Marysville. I just had a beginner fellow over this weekend for a few hours of intro lessons.

But I currently don't have a 2x72 grinder. The 2x42 that I did have burned up, as did my disk grinder motor within a week of each other. I was not happy. Got a new motor, but need to reassemble my disk grinder.

I generally forge my knives to shape, then clean them up with hand tools, because I'm big on traditional methods. You can come on up and we can bang on the anvil for a while.

If for nothing else, come over for a beer and some deer steak one afternoon.

ib2v4u, if I got it correct - he has a gorilla avatar, is in Mt. Vernon. There are a few others that don't post very often who are in N. Snohomish county.

You can e-mail me if you like. I have a flexible schedule this quarter.

Later,
Brook

Nick, I should of given you ring when I was in Castle Rock during Elk season. I'm down there every other month or so to visit my gramps on Tower Rd.

Nick....I apologize for not putting you on my list! When I was typing that post, I sat there for a long time thinking..."I know there is someone else that I should be putting on the list." Guess that means I'll never get an invite to the Wheeler Ranch. :o

Bob Cramer is actually in Olympia I believe. At least the last two times I went out to his shop that is where it was. Bill Cottrell is in Tenino. I am also in Olympia and have the KMG. One of these days I need to get back into the shop and get stuff done. Been in a funk lately and life is interfering. Dan

Thanks for the info everyone.

Ed,

Country Village in Bothell is not that far from me (I used to work down in that area)... so I'll likely try to look Lyle up. I wasn't able to find him online... do you have any contact info? I'll also look up a copy of Knives 2009.

Nick,

Your offer is awesome... I'll fire off an e-mail to get specifics (then run it past my wife to make sure she and the girls can let me go for a day) ;).

Brook,

With my current equipment, I am mainly interested in picking up the art of grinding... but beer and deer steak is always nice :D. Weekends and Mondays are usually open for me. I'll send you and e-mail.

Thanks for all the responses. Anyone else in the Snohomish County area willing to let somebody watch you grind for a few hours ... let me know.

Erin

Tom Kernan is in Lynnwood. He has a KMG and is real hoot to spend time with in his shop. I spent an afternoon with him last year and it really propelled my skills. Since that time I have begun to feel like I actually know what I'm doing, well kind of... He's pretty busy with stuff, but is always willing to engage in knifechat on the telephone.

You can search blade forums for his name, which is also his handle.

Good luck.

Thanks Brook... I fired an e-mail off to Tom.

I live in Mt Vernon. I would help a newbie start some bad habits. LOL. I have been busy lately, but, my life just took a major change and I think I will need to spend a lot of time in the shop in a few weeks.

ib2v4u, I have been following your situation and pray that your recent change is for the best. -- Brook

Brook- Next time you're going to be in the area, let me know! :)

Erin- Fired back an email. :)

Ed- You're welcome anytime! :D I'm far enough south it's not really considered the Seattle area anyway ;) :D

I didn't know there was anyone that actually finished knives in Washington other than Ray, oh wait, he's in Oregon. :p

Getting started?... Why that's better than I could even imagine. Best I was hoping for was somebody to make sure I'm pointed in right general direction. :D "Well there's yur problem... Yur grindin' on the wrong side of the belt." :p
