Knifemakers -- when did you decide?

How many of you guys were knifemakers, then joined Bladeforums, and how many weren't knifemakers before joining? If not, when did you decide to change your "Gold" to "Knifemaker?"

I'm debating about changing mine to the said handle, but I'm not quite sure if I'm worthy of it. I've been making for awhile now, but it's just a hobby. I made a few crappy knives in my pre-teens, but have just now gotten into it pretty head-on lately. Been buying plenty of knifemaking equipment, soaking up all the information I can, and testing/breaking my knives to ensure they'll work in the real world.

I never thought I would want to sell knives, but I do. One, it helps with the cost of the supplies, and with other knife purchases. Two, I want people to be able to enjoy something I've created. This is a complete 180-degree thought process from when I started.

So what say the masses? Should I go for it, or stick with the Gold Membership? I just don't want to discredit the Knifemaker status by changing my handle. You guys are a ton better at the trade than I and I don't want to feel like I "jumped the gun."

Thanks, sorry for the long ramble. Been debating this for awhile.

I been making knives for about 22 years. For some reason I never looked for forums about knives till here lately. I am really enjoying these forums and thinking about supporting them.I have NO desire to put a web site up I can't keep up now as it is. Now that I started using these forums seems like I added another tool to the shop. When people like Peter Atwood tell me my knives look nice it makes me want to attempt to better my folders, hearing a compliment from such a good maker. And I have the upmost respect for straight blade makers as well , I get tired just looking at some of there work, because I know how much time and effort goes in it.

I got pointed here by Scott FUlford. I went through some directions he gave on another site as to making a basic knife, and got hooked. So when I started nagging him with all my questions, he pointed me here. Think he got sick of my constant emails. ;)

I think I finished my first knife before I came here(not sure, it was all right about same time), but it was a while after I'd been ehre before I was willing to even think of calling myself a knifemaker. Even now I'm doubtful at times, depends on my mood, and whether I just screwed something up on the grinder. :)

Made my first knives back in 93 , got hooked on pounding 3 year's ago when the " Bug bite me " i will make until i die or am no longer able for health reason's , sound's pretty "Hard core " but the soul of the knives is what keep's me going , it is good to sell some to keep out of pocket expenses down . I respect the hell out of some "Maker's out there .

GO FOR IT but it will change you !! :)

Already been hitting it pretty hard lately. I'm a writer by trade and hold a full-time job as an editor/writer and do freelance on the side. The only problem is that I've seemed to hit this full-bore and am wondering where I'm going from here (mid-knife crisis :D ). I think it comes down to whether I believe I deserve to change my status to knifemaker and whether it's going to become more than a hobby.

ah heck, I'm going to do it. :D Just wish the had one that said "part-time knifemaker," or "newbie knifemaker." :D

hahah, you're not only one. But hey, gives you a standard to live up to.

THough I know in my heart that I'll never in my life match up to quality of some of makers(or artists, if you prefer) here, doesn't mean I can't stop trying.

Good point -- request put in, sig line revised. :D

I found this forum while searching for information on making my first knife. I had not made knives before. I became a paying member after making several knives and after selling one or two (about a year or a little less later than first showing up here).

If you make knives your a knifemaker. Most of us are part time hobby type guys that love knives. We all start from nothing and learn and share as we move forward. I was on the forum from its start and thats where I met my mentor thru the bladeforums chat room. Been a great ride so far! ;)

Change over. I can't remember when I came across the forum but, I don't think I'd have gotten as far as I have without it. This is only my third year at grinding blades and I still don't feel like I'm really a knifemaker but, like it's been said, if you make knives ( I mean, really make them) your a knifemaker. Come on over. This grass is really green.;) :D
