I just completed a weekend class (two full days) with Karl Schroen (author of the book "The Hand Forged Knife"). Karl is a full time knifemaker / bladesmith who works out of his blacksmith shop in Sebastopol, about 60 miles north of San Francisco. He takes two students maximum for the two day weekend class, and I can't say enough about the quality of the experience and instruction. We started on Saturday morning with a 5/8" steel rod (L-6) and by Sunday evening, had hammer forged (in a coal forge), annealed, heat-treated, tempered, profiled (to our own design), ground, and polished the blade, fit a handguard, and attached a handle. We ran out of time, but all that is left is a few hours of careful handsanding and blending, and I will have a custom knife that I designed and helped to create. What a tremendous experience.
Karl is a third generation blacksmith who combines 25 years of forging and knifemaking experience with a continuing scientific study of the materials science as it applies to high grade tool steels. If you have a technical background, he will discuss the physics and chemistry of these steels and how he controls and manipulates the processes to achieve optimum blade performance.
My wife gave me the class as a birthday present, and it is an experience I will never forget. Given that you will come away from the class with a custom, handmade knife plus a wealth of knowledge and a resource in Karl with whom you will always be able to call to answer your questions, the tuition must rank as one of the greatest bargains around. I cannot give any higher recommendation.
