Knifemaking Suppliers List

How about a quench oil section?

I am finding quench oil selection seems to be , for me, the hardest part yet.

I think people just give up and order Brownell's . I searched MSC direct and didn't find anything. Park is easy to search but a pain to get.

There has to be an easy more diverse supply ..

Having looked at this sticky, I find one category somewhat deficient (or perhaps just lumped into another)... chemicals for knifemakers. Specifically, I'd like to know where to go to get Ashpaltum. I poked around in Google and noticed Dick Blick art supply is supposed to have it, and one other art supply store does have it, but charges twice as much for shipping as the product costs.

I need this to make an etch resist, as described in one of the books I read (probably the Boye book).

Anyway, does anyone know of a source for Asphaltum? Also, I presume the canned liquid is what I need (not some other form, such as the paint in tube type).

How do you feel about fingernail polish as a paint on

or

wax as a scratch off type instead?

Whatever works. At some point I do want to try my hand at engraving a blade, not unlike the Dark Lady blade I finished out... but for now my needs are simple.

Greg,
Probably best to start a new thread about etching techniques. The stickys are not really the right place to ask questions. This one is for posting links to suppliers.

Ill take a look--Thanks Marekz

Regarding handle materials, It seems like specialized dealers of wood, Stabilized wood, micarta, G10, wood stabilizers, etc are lumped in Group 1 with general knife suppliers. IMHO it seems to me that they should be included in Group 2.

Heat-treaters section?

Thanks for the work you're putting into this. It will never be complete, of course.

Sheffields Knife Makers Supply has asphaltum, and the other ingredients with a recipe.

also i would like to hear any comments or suggestions about this thread--thank again[/QUOTE]

You could probably add supergrit to group 6 and this should be a sticky

Best source for Grobet files is B2BProfessionalTools.com. (760) 322-6037. Ask for Tom. If you ask nicely, he may give you a discount.

As said earlier, this is an open sticky for posting links to suppliers. It is not really a question thread.

Most suppliers today will ship anywhere in the world once payment is made. There are a few places that people won't ship to because the packages never arrive, but most major countries are fine.

Filling out your profile will help a lot, as no one knows what country you live in. Ask questions about supplies and procedures in a new thread in Shop Talk.
