I see all the congradulations on a couple of forums for people that have gotten into Knives 2005. How does one apply, or do you get lucky and the editors find you? Do you need to be in a Magazine first, or hold a certian rank with the ABS? I've never checked into it, and this seems like a great time to learn. :p

Call Joe Kertzman at Krause and talk to him. Just a matter of filling out a sheet with your information and sending him some pictures.
Even if you don't have pics, get your name and info included.

I have done the same thing Kit suggested with my own pictures and only had one ever show up in a magazine. The pictures are everything. Most makers in there have had professional photos taken and submitted. It costs money but unless you can take high quality pictures yourself it is the best way. I have had the pictures taken and wrote all the specs on the back and have had good luck sumitting them myself. It usually costs about $100 per knife to have a pro do it all.

And that's money well spent. I've never submitted to the knives Annual but I think I'll do that too. Thanks for the ideas!

If I ever forget all else there is one thing I shall never-ever forget. That is the day some year or better ago Bruce told me "it is the picture". The picture. No good picture, no go.

The best time for submissions is early spring, gives Joe time to sort through things and find a place for them. I have sent them in as late as May but that was pushing the publishing limit.

Given the new all colour format I expect the quality of the photos will be paramount consideration, with the old b&w on newsprint the photo quality was not so much a problem.

I think I made it in the back this year but it was too late for a picture to be put in. Joe is an awsome guy and will work with you and doesnt "limit" it to certain people.

I just give him room and dont email him but only when I have something worth sending in.....

I sell some knives at Blade Gallery and Danial takes the photos for his listings and then sends a copy to several magazines and to the Knives annual. Gib

I'm disappointed, I had 2 knives professionally photographed last winter and asked the photographer to be submit them along with a profile I sent with the knives to knives 2005 and the pictures nor the profile didn't make it in the book. I've had knives published in 2003 and 2004 but nothing this time. :(

Hey Bill-

I know it sounds a little arrogant, but I kind of expected to be in there again too. 5 in '03 and 4 in'04, but none this time around. I figure they pick and choose what's in front of them for pics...but still don't understand why they've never published my contact info.

Better contact 'em again I guess!

That's exactly what I did. I was just wanting to have my info put in the directory. About a month or two after I sent in the info and photos, I got a letter from Joe saying he was considering putting me in the knifemakers showcase of an upcoming issue of Blade. Boy was I suprised. I got the Knives 2005 and was suprised to see a photo on page 74 of one of my knives. :D They did mispell my name in the directory, Grossman instead of Gossman. I've always had a problem with this. I guess I was in the right place at the right time.

Scott, I also agree with what Bruce said. Unless you are a top notch picture taker, have them done professionally. You don't want a bad picture of your knife in there any more than they do.
IMHO, if you are a knifemaker, you should get the form, fill it out, and send it in with or without pictures.

I have seen it written by one of the editors of a knife mag that the reason they prefer professional fotographs is due to the formatting the pros use and the difficulty of using "regular" fotos shot on "regular" cameras. Stuff about the transfer process, resolutions, color etc. I'm sorry I don't remember the details.

I have to agree with what everyone is saying. It's worth sending just the bio part because it is free advertising. While I haven't had any knives featured, my sheaths have been featured the last 4 years.I have taken all my pics but will probably get some pro work done for next year.Congrats to those that were picked.Dave :D

We do all our own photos for magazines and ads. There is not usually a problem with acceptance but Carol has found that since a lot of magazines like to pick the photo of the knife off and just use the knife it is often adventageous to submit a photo on a plain background instead of a studio shot with lots of decoration.

I agree with that also, because the pics I sent were ones I took with a 35mm camera. The only reason I sent them was because Joe requested some pics. I don't know how they were able to do what they did with that pic. You can see the difference in the book between regular pics and professional pics. I think because it was the first time for me was the reason I got in. That's got to be a rough job for Joe, deciding which pics to use. Promptness is also important. Get the info and pics in Early, as Joe said it betters your chance of getting in. As soon as you get the form in the spring, fill it out and send it in. Now is a good time to get your pics together. It is an honor to be in there with the best knifemakers in the world even though I feel I don't deserve it. I have a long way to go and greatly appreciate all the encouragement I get from everyone on this forum. Thanks guys for being there. ;)
