Ok, so im riding the amtrak to baltimore on sunday, and was wondering how strict they are with knived in checked luggage? Should i take mt reguler edc a ti jyd 2, or something like say an opinel?

it's been a few years, but i went from KC to Chicago to DC to Philly with a 3" folder clipped on my pocket. and never had to deal with anyone about it. i never checked any bags though, i basically had to carry everything.

things could have changed in the last 4 years...

Last year took Amtrak from Chicago to Springfield, IL, with the kids. Wore a SOG multitool on my belt and no one batted an eyelash.

Amtrak's Baggage Policy lists under prohibited items:

Large, sharp objects such as axes, ice picks and swords.

I'm not familiar with the knife you mentioned, but as long as it's not some huge bowie knife it shouldn't be a problem. I've carried pocket knives on Amtrak trains before too.

I carry a Umnumzaan on the LIRR every day. I had a friend just take the Amtrak back home to MI (NYC to Ann Arbor) with a Buck clipped to his pocket. No problems on the train.

It sounds like their only concern is the safety of their luggage handlers, since the items listed could be capable of punching through the side of a bag and cutting someone.

I rode Amtrak from Texas to Michigan last year and just made sure my pocket knife wasn't visible so I wouldn't draw attention from security personnel since I don't think you're technically supposed to have "weapons" (although a pocket knife is not a weapon...) aboard a train or in the station. There are no security checkpoints like in airports so it was a non-issue as long as I kept my knife out of sight.

They don't really do any security screening of checked bags either, so you should be fine there, too.

Road mechanics, for the RR I worked for, always carried a knife on their work belt.
Then the management came out with a memo, forbidding wearing of knives?
Didn't matter to them that these were WORK KNIVES, used for everything from unscrewing communication panels, to stripping electrical insulation.

Freakin' STUPID!?

Steve

Just rode the train last night from Chicago to St. Louis had my Spyderco Police clipped to my pocket, then had a gerber multi-tool on my belt. Have the rest of my EDCs in my bag for my week long trip.

I've carried my 4" Cold Steel "Voyager" folder many times on the M.B.T.A. (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) trains and subways in Boston and the surrounding communities without a problem. I just keep it completely concealed deep in my pocket. Boston's anti-knife law prohibits carrying knives in public if the blade is longer than 2.5".

Amtrak shouldn't be a problem, but I'm not sure. I took a greyhound bus from Helena, Montana to Olympia, WA lst summer with a RAT 7 and ATAX, but kept them well concealed.

Not to kill this thread, but he took the trip three months ago. Evidently nothing happened.

I'm wondering when they'll have full body scanners and pat-downs at trains, subway, and boats.
