This may be a dumb question and I think the answer is yes but I want to make sure. I haven't been on a plane in almost 20 years. I know you obviously can't take knives on airplanes but can you put one in your check in luggage? I'm going to Florida in a couple of weeks and I would feel naked if I don't have a knife with me when I'm there on vacation. Thanks.

You can check your knives in baggage but be aware that many people have lost their knives from checked luggage. Ken Onion lost his entire shows worth. Just be careful and lock the luggage if they will allow you to once it has been checked.

when I have to travel by air, I just carry an inexpensive Kershaw (~$10). It get put through check thru with my shaving stuff. If it gets stolen, lost or confiscated, no big deal.

After the Ken Onion incident, I wanted to be very careful going to Blade as i was taking a couple of very valuble collector knives to sell. I bought a seperate bag and TSA lock and got the Delta folks to walk me over to the TSA X-ray machine and have the bag checked and handled by them. I guess nobody told Delta that you aren't supposed to give knives the same VIP treatment as guns:D

Yep, heard about people getting the "Ken Onion treatment" from unscrupulous baggage checkers, so I just bring the more inexpensive knives with me when I go somewhere. Something that won't bum me out if it disappeared.

It would be easy to see ken's recurves and designs in a x-ray. I would pack it in lead powder just to be safe! :D

I have been told you can packed the items in a separate case and have the case hand inspected,a TSA seal placed on the bag, then locked with a TSA lock and shrink wrapped.

What I did last time I flew to a show with a large batch of knives was to send then UPS (you can use any trusted carrier). They were sent to the show coordinators business address, and they were at the show waiting for me.The shipping on 70 pounds of knives wasn't too bad. The insurance for $10,000 was a bit,but insurance is part of doing business.

I regularly check my carry knives when I travel and have had no issues yet. If I'm taking several knives someplace I'll generally take a firearm as well and put them all in the same case as the firearm. The do NOT lose or molest bags with firearms in them.

I put my edc in my toiletry bag with my razor and stuff, which is on the bottom of the bag with clothes on top of it. They would have to go a long way to get to it, and almost empty the bag. I have head that if you pack the knife parallel to the bag, sitting on it's spine it's hard to see in the x-ray machine, you don't get a profile view.

Thanks guys. I guess there's always the risk of things being stolen but I'm not really worried about that. All I carry is a very old Endura and SAK. I just wanted to make sure that it was allowed in my check in luggage.

I have not had any issues flying with knives. Use a good suitcase with a decent lock, this will help discourage theft. Secondly, make sure the knives are sheathed to prevent them from cutting through the suitcase with handling. As an added measure tie down the knives if they have a thong hole. In the event the suitcase bursts open for whatever reason, the knives will be tied down inside and less likely to spill out.
