Knives and Amusement Parks

..Fixed blades are illegal to carry in CA (if not just LA and Orange County) if your not out hiking, hunting, etc., so the thought of carrying a BK11 just never crossed my mind as it isn't an option at all for me. I still think it is amazing how some of you guys carry fixed blade as EDC's, but it just goes to show how different states are. I've seen people come to CA and FREAK OUT when they see motorcyclists lane splitting regularly. Here it is legal and not a problem at all. Other places it is a big deal. ...

I've got a long story about going to CA and having my knives that I did at the time. But to make it short; I got picked up by CHP because my truck broke down and we were walking back up I5 to the nearest gas station at dusk. The officer asked if I had any weapons on me and I told him I have a few knives (a 3" folder, 4.5" folder and my Gill Hibbon krambit). He took 'em all and drove us the the gas station. After he let me out and talked with his partner he came over and said "I don't know how you guys roll up in WA but down here in CA you can't carry these things," and gave 'em back. They were cool about it when they could have taken them all from me.

I know it has nothing to do with roller coasters, just different area laws. Sorry for the rant.

I grew up in Redondo Beach, which means I did a lot of growing up at Disneyland. Disneyland and I are about the same age, me being 3 or 4 months older. I had a lot of firsts at D'land. It was the first amusement park I ever went to. First coaster (The Matterhorn). My high school sweetheart and I went there one stormy night and almost had the whole park to ourselves. We dutifully boarded the bobsled that flies through the Matterhorn Mountain, and we were alone in the sled that would usually have at least 2 more people on it, when something went wrong with the ride and we stopped inside the mountain. Stayed stuck there for almost an hour, and we managed to complete our first semi-public sex act too. LOL

No knife stories about Disneyland per se, but it is kind of interesting to read y'all talking about knife laws in CA. I'm old enough to have actually been on my high school's rifle team, which has been unheard of in CA ever since the last tournament I competed in. Auto knives were illegal when I was there, but I don't think fixed blades were, unless they were over 4" I think.

See, I'm kinda the opposite. When CA started going so sideways as to impose helmet laws, limit knife and gun ownership and a laundry list of of other freedom-stifling laws, I FREAKED OUT and then GOT OUT! We packed up and headed South about a month after the last fires were extinguished from the Rodney King riots just blocks from our house. Dixie ain't perfect, but damn close for an independent, self-reliant, liberty-lovin', wannabe hermit like me. Oh, and my wife drove the van and I rode the Harley for the first 500 miles or so, and I split traffic all the way outta town! LOL

The last time I was at kings Island was October of last year, and I honestly can't remember if they had Metal Detectors or not. My wife and I used to go to KI once a year for her birthday, for the Halloween Festivities. Last year will be the last time we go for a while, the FrightFest was pretty lame this last year, I attribute it to Paramount pulling out. We have plans to go to another park this year, so, we'll see.

Last 2 times I was in LA, I carried a BK14 concealed. No one ever knew it was there. I never knew that fixed blades were illegal there. I also carried my Colt in my bag as well, everywhere I went too. Figures. Thanks for the heads up, I will be back in LA in last week in April, so, I'm make sure I am Kalifornia legal.

Thanks for the heads up, sqoon, you may have just saved me some trouble.

i remember being able to fly with a spydero back in the day. now, don't even thank about it.

I have several of the little Spyderco knives that I used for flying. I don't even remember the names of them. Navigator? That seems like one of them. Anyway, for trips, my wife bought me a stainless Dragonfly and even had my initials put on it. Soon after... 9/11. That ended that.

I once waltzed through a metal detector at the Sears Tower knowing full well I had a knife in my pocket. Said detector didn't go off, and I kept going on my merry way.

I really like the little Fahfegnuvven U2 for carry in places like that. Never had a problem with it. I keep it on my keychain.

What I have found is that if you have a pocket clip, you are essentially advertising the fact you have a knife. If I put my IZULA in my pocket in the sheath I cut down specifically for that, it is the same size or even smaller than a decent folding knife, is still accessible with one hand and there is no "tell" that I have it. It is rather comfortable in there as well.

Isn't showing the pocket clip a way of bypassing the concealed weapon laws? And I love my fixed blades I just can't conceive of carrying them on my person around town. Folders are just too convenient.

So, for the guys that are thinking that they will be able to take a tool into an amusement park, check their rules and policies, BEFORE you get to the gate, or you might lose your knife for the stay, or longer, if Barney "misplaces" the item that matches your ticket number. Universal Studios Island of Adventure, CS Recon 1 Clip point. He was smiling when I handed it over, I knew he was going to steal it. I talked to the Chief of Security about it, his only advice was "Shouldn't have brought a weapon anyway".

Yes, in theory. But, you are also advertising the fact you are carrying a knife and give them probable cause to look for something else. Why not just have a small fixed blade, in your pocket that does not attract any attention. Or, just carry a SAK.

course, one can vote with your money, and refuse to go to such venues.

regular door guard/securityas such cannot *confiscate* anything. not even the TSA. remember that. why? remember that these PEOPLE are typically not any kind of law enforcement but PEOPLE just like you and as such they cannot arrest you. thus, you are voluntarily surrendering it when they ask nicely. in many cases, permanently. i'd call it theft, but you gave it to them.

if you get cranky, they can call the police over to deal with you. they will too. best call the police first ;)

given a choice? i'd not go at all, but that's not always prudent (esp with a family). if i knew ahead of time (good guess), you leave it in the car. if you find out at the gate, you go back to your car (always allow plenty of time to do this). no other time? make somebody a gift, or bury it, or throw it away.

california (in particular) was making it a practice for a long time to sell by bulk on ebay, all the "confiscated" items they took in. lot of 50 spydercos went for like $20-30 before people noticed :>

I'm headed to Oaks Park in Portland, OR tomorrow with my full sized grip and SAK Super Tinker. I called Benchmade and asked for some deep pocket carry clips. One of them is on said Griptillian. When I get to the gates, I'm going to drop the grip deep in my pocket and say nothing. If they ask me to hand either over, I will walk back to my car and leave the one they noticed there. Other than that, shouldn't be a problem

What is your obsession with trying to get knives into places that they aren't allowed? There are some times where you just don't need a knife, amusement parks are really one of those times. Sure, you can probably find a use for a knife in one, but you can also get away without having one and be no worse for wear.

If you have to purposely sneak a knife into someplace, it's better to just leave them at home.

Also, this is the Becker K&T subforum, you posted nothing Becker-related in a 5-year-old thread while acting the fool, not cool.
