Out of curiosity, and it may be a dumb question, but what’s the little notch in the rim of the cup for?

I would think it is cut out for a spoon handle to rest in. (not sure though)

Indeed, it is to put the "touillette"* that I personally don't use because I don't sugar my coffee.
*(or coffee spoon)
