Knives and commercial flights? BACK FROM MY TRIP W/ PICS

Moosez45 and others have nailed it. I've flown from Canada into various US cities and never had a problem as long as my knives were packed in my checked luggage. Only time I've had an issue was when forgot about a small swiss army knife in my carry-on bag. They pulled it and I had to either leave it with airport security or mail it home.

@Moosez45 - Good call on the putting the knives in the shaving kit and using an inventory list.

You can send anything you want in a checked bag without issue. I always take a small knife in my check bag (if I fly with a larger bag), but I normally just go with a carry on, and that gives me a reason to go buy another knife as soon as I land! I spent two years stationed at Ft. irwin in souther California..........word of advice: if you think you already have enough water......take more. Trust me.

Oh yeah, and then some!! Lol I've been there before so I am quite prepared for that..thanks though for the advice brother.

The problem is you are subject to the interpretations of the TSA agent(s) handling your bag at the time. I've actually heard two TSA agents debate on whether or not a knife could be carried in checked baggage. Good luck.

Lefty's statement is probably the most realistic scenario. It doesn't matter what is legal or not, even according to the TSA list of approved items. Eventually it comes down to the mood the TSA agent. "Legally" you can check it, just make sure the blade is legal in CA to carry it.

in 2009 I flew from St.L to Anchorage AK - my wife and I only had carry on bags. I took my Badlands hunting pack. When we got to Homer, AK- I was looking for my compass and there was my EsKaBar!!!!! Forgot it was even there! I was suprised it passed through TSA! Made it back home with it also!!
I wouldn't chance it again. It was a mistake on my part, but wow!

TSA has stolen stuff from us from checked bags.
Moose's inventory is a good idea.
I haven't flown in years, good luck with that.

Monofletch, Homer is a lovely little town. Did you move? I was there in 2002.

My GF accidentally left her SAK in her purse, made it through security with no problems. She didn't even realize it was in there until we had been at our destination for a couple days. We decided not to risk it on the return flight and we just mailed it back home.

No, I live south of St. L----BUT------I will live somewhere in the Kenai Peninsula before I die!!!!

I trust those TSA goons as far as I can throw them. I would cover the blade in petro jelly, soak it in Cold Steel Inferno, and sheath it. When you arrive, wash it. If they decide to take it, they will regret stealing it later. I do not, and will not fly anymore as long as this system is in place. Screw them. Don't take an ipad either, unless you want it to disappear and end up in some TSA agents' kids birthday pile.

If I had to, I would mail my steel to myself at the desination and have it signed for. Thats what a lot of people do when going to Blade.

At a minimum I would pick up a lock for your bag. I've "lost" a few things flying in and our of CA. Last one was a camera that no one in TSA seemed to have any knowledge of.

Never flown commercial, but when I eventually do, all my knives are going into the lining of my luggage, with documentation of what is in my checked bags and how much it's worth (plus a little extra for sentimental value).

If it were me, I'd just pay a few bucks and have it sent USPS insured to your destination. There's no 100% guarantee it gets there, but I'd trust that over TSA and it's always insured.

I'd rather try and submit a claim with USPS than an airline company.

Hey guys, I arrived to my destination and the 14 was still safely nestled in my maxpedition 6x9 pouch shaving kit..I will try to post pictures of me and the 14s adventures in the mighty valley of death searching for fabled Spanish treasure besides digging in the dirt for some gold on my downtime..wish me luck!!

Ps...I have realized after flying twice today to get to good old SoCal that I really am creeped out by the thought of no parachutes on those darn things.

You have to be certified to go sky diving, and I doubt that if the plane is going down the airline attendants want to go through and check peoples harnesses. Also, parachutes and skirts/dresses don't really work.

My point; People could survive a plane crash, they will not survive failing to open a parachute.

So I have returned from my trip last night from the Mojave and various other places in the great state of California...Didn't find what I was looking for but I will return there again..did gold pan a bit after I traveled to the San Joaquin and did a little r and r with some family members who live in the area...thanks to moose for advising me to place my 14 in my shave kit with a note listing the contents...anyway the first pics are in the middle of the Mojave looking for some famed Spanish treasure..sorry about the limited pics but there was no one who could hold my camera...I didn't go out there to pose and do modeling...I went out for loot.

Great pics, I love the Mojave, spent a couple of years out there, looking for what you were looking for. Granted I was younger, but gold is gold.

It was in the 100s and water was no place to be found..I think that next time I'm going to drive my rig instead of fly so I can bring more gear that I needed that was important...all in all it was a great trip even if I came up empty handed.I did get some flour gold though..
