Knives and Drinks!

I got another life lesson on distraction. I had been in a rush and stopped off at the store for some bourbon. I was on the phone with my wife when I walked passed this. I like the regular Basil Hayden. The idea of a rye from them was novel. I took a quick look at the blurb and thought it was a rye that had been stored in a port cask. I've had other whiskeys stored in sherry casks before, so I didn't really think about it. Well, I thought wrong! This is something entirely different. While still 80 proof, it's a blend of Kentucky Straight, Canadian Rye, and port wine. I was not impressed. Neither was anyone else.

I thought it might work in a Manhattan but I didn't have cherries handy. I tried a dash of Angostura Bitters but that didn't help. Maybe this could be used for boozy cherries?

Doing a search, there is such as a thing as a Port Manhattan that uses rye, replaces vermouth with port, changes the cherry for an orange twist, and switches to orange bitters. I also noticed a Port Old-Fashioned that uses bourbon with port and maple syrup. I suppose this could work as the whiskey and port in either. Maybe I'll try the first one next weekend...
