Safety and knives are priority.. yet we let ourselves slip just for the moment and OUCH !!!!!

Although I'm a knife addict and some people think I'm a little crazy:jerkit:
I tend to follow some of the guidelines set forth in knife safety:foot:

Today, I was out clearing some large weeds with 3 machetes, my plan was to do a small review on them de-limbing some trees.. But first I wanted to clear some large weeds and have them in the dirt a bit.. Tried a real cheap 18" (walmart type) machete I found some time ago, then decided to try my newly re-profiled Marbles 14" bolo, as I was distracted in the moment (sweating etc) I removed the bolo from the sheath and OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got bit bigtime, I undid both straps on the sheath and was slipping it out when it rubbed against my thumb (right where the joint bends on the inside) and transferred instant pain, I dropped the knife and my free hand went instantly to the wound to compress it, blood ran around the wound profusely, where I was afraid to look as I thought my thumb would be hanging by the bone..

Luckily this was done on my property and I was near the house, I ran it under the water (blood everywhere) then peroxide, tried a bandage and it held a while but the wound reopened and started pouring again.. I found some liquid bandage adn tried that, so far so good (but then again I've made it a point not to bend)..

I really need stitches guys.. but refuse to get them as they're gonna cost me anyway I look at it.. I'm simply an idiot I know, as I've already punctured a tendon last March batoning wood..Weeks later I went to the doctor which ultimately translated to cash-out-of-pocket>
My post is merely to inform you of what an Idiot I am and most of all to WARN those who think they're beyond being injured by their own knives.. It happens to the best of us (especially those that are in CONTROL)..

As said: if you play with knives you're bound to get CUT !!

How much has your knives cost you??? physically, spiritually, monetarily, and even include property damages...

Disclaimer: I'm not afraid of those on the high horse who want to bash me I can take it and really need the punishment right about now..

Hey bro, I'm certainly not going to flame you-I've been there, done that.
I would absolutely recommend you go get stitches though-a small upfront cost versus potentially costly long term issues later. Please go get looked at.

Good luck!

I'm simply an idiot I know..

Well, knowing it is half the battle! ;)
Don't sweat it Last Daze, most have accide ntally cut themselves, though few bad enough to require stitches I'm guessing. I've only nicked myself in the kitchen or yard and never needed a trip to the doc. I'd say stay frosty in the future and save yourself the grief; machetes can be dangerous things. Just ask any Rwandan.

Be sure to see your doc if there's any red lines spreading from the cut up your hand or arm or if you develop a fever. Your garden soil is full of nasty bacteria!

Yeah I highly suggest you go get stitches if its a deep cut. The risk for a serious infection is more likely with deep cuts that take awhile to close up. Feel better and take care. Make sure you dont overdo it with the peroxide and other disinfectants since they kill healthy cells along with the bacteria and can cause your wound to heal slower.

agreed, although this happened before I used the knife after I reprofiled it from some nasty chip it had got the first day I got it, wasn't impressed with the knife etc.. but man is this sucker sharp now...

to add to the misery, my wife's at her sisters picking up my niece/nephew for an overnighter with my kids.. she's on her last year to be a NURSE !!..(so I'll never hear the end of it)

also my 7 yr. old son called his mom to tell her I cut my thumb off!!!! (wait til your mother gets home) LOL

I don't think the actual cut is that bad upon further inspection (although I didn't inspect inside cuz if I opened or moved it, it bled like crazy..)

the problem I see is, its right where your thumb bends..

Get yourself some surgical 'crazy glue', a padded aluminum thumb splint, a few Telfa pads, some Polysporin and some bandage wrap. Dress the wound daily and hide from the wife. ;)

apf, wish I'd read your post before my wife got home.. to late now:grumpy:

I splinted it a minute ago with two toothpicks with the sharp ends cut off...... (she liked that).......

Anyhow I'll make a pro splint and bandage later, she's under the impression if I can keep it from re-opening I'm good to go....

Boy she loves my knives !!

To be fair I expected a lashing, she's been pretty cool and hasn't said one word about knives or any sarcastic remarks:eek:

I must be in shock:D

I'm a ski patroller, so I can handle acute trauma on myself pretty well.

If my parents live close by and I see them every day for dinner..I usually hear it if my mom is cooking and she sees the garbage filled with bloody medical gear.

Knives are too much fun! And the endorphins produced from cuts offsets the pain! :)

Sell a couple of your knives to pay for the doctor.

That's just plain weird.

OP- thanks for informing us you are an idiot (your words, not mine).

Same reason we apparently get addicted to spicy foods.. :D

I'm just kidding, but a knife truly is the most therapeutic thing I think money can buy.

One can comfortably ponder anything while turning a stick into a pile of shavings.

No problem, glad I could inform you of such matters as they arise..

Ain't that the truth !!

I'm surprised that wasn't posted earlier.. I'm actually surprised I didn't try to take photos as I'm as twisted as you.. but my main focus was to stop the bleeding.. When it did stop I was more in the mood to keep it that way..

maybe belated pics tomorrow would suffice?? of course you wont get the full effect.

So you're satisfied with the cutting ability of the Marbles Machete?J.K.Good luck,Keep it clean, take it easy.....Ps to all viewing the thread.Im doing a giveaway in both the traditional sub forum and the multitool.A laser sharp old soddie and a Nice swiss Vic.

Don't feel too bad, I did the same thing to myself with a USGI machete when I was about 14. I got the tip of my left index finger (holding the scabbard with the left hand) drew the machete with the right and kissed my finger with the blade. It took 7 or 8 stitches to patch it up. I have a healthy respect for big blades now.

The basic rule for cuts, if you can stop the bleeding you probably don't need stitches.

When it comes to sharp objects..... your always going to cut yourself in one way or another. As you become more experienced with ever sharper objects you gain new respects for their abilities and powers, you still cut yourself just not as often.

Cuts on a finger joint suck! (pics or it didn't happen) ;)
