Knives and Urban Survival - The RAO

Good review!! Those are probably the ugliest knives made lol.... but I do have a soft spot for them. That is a very wide blade and a strange tanto style, I'm shocked it penetrated so well. And I love that double lock that's a grate feature to have on a "urban survival" knife.

Just got one of these, I love big heavy folders. I guess ugly is what it does best, because you can do some ugly things with it! The weight is good in your hands, it can be flipped open, with some practice. It can penetrate, slice, dice, and intimidate. I also have a ZT 200 and a Gerber Parabellum, so I am used to large knifes.

Will it be my EDC? In uniform with knife pockets or in it's sheath, yes. In jeans, no, far too large to be comfortable and easily deployable if needed. So, great knife for about everything but EDC

As an alternative, the 'spare tool' by CRKT, designed by Raleigh Tabor, is about twenty bucks.

As the saying goes- beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Indeed it is. While some ER knives have relatively "unique" blade shapes/grinds, I for one like them. Some people on these forums like stag handled knives, I think they're hideous. Each to his own. That said, the ergonomics and fit/finish of ER is fantastic. I can't comment on the RAO, but it does look to be a very tough folder in a smaller package. It's definitely one of the toughest folders around. I have a ER Shrapnel OG Testudo and it's one tough little fixed blade with fantastic ergos ... with a gorgeous full flat grind.
