Knives as art-under priced!!!

Art is a word that can mean anything to anybody. I've seen the government waste hundreds of thousands of dollars on a single, ugly piece of stone. Fine armor has always walked a fine line between craftsmanship and materials. A gold dagger would not make for the finest blade from a utilitarian standpoint, but it would be beautiful.

Nothing put together by mass production should be classed "art." It's not enough that a Damascus blade have swirls and flourishes; it should also be able to perform because the maker thought enough of it to make it from the finest materials. Some of the finest Japanese pieces I've seen also are the best performers because sword making was a source of pride.

The value of art is in the eye of the beholder, the value of tools are in the hand of the beholder. Lets keep knives reasonably priced and in our hands.

alot of people have the misunderstanding of art . art does not have to be a painting or a sculptur and thats where people make the mistake, im a collector of many things and will begin my journey into making knives .I will admit i have a touch of excessive compulsive order so this will enable me to make knives that i hope to achieve being called a work of art . any master maker of anything makes works of art once they have mastered the skills needed some people just come by it more natural. how could one think your not looking at a knife that a skilled maker has made and ponder at its beauty not to say that its a work of art. the original knife makers of this country the mammoth hunters didnt just grab a rock and make a knife the techinc and skill passed down for thousands of years was developed before stone knives and spear points that look like works of art appeared.Just my perspective kellyw

Some knives are very artistic but of dubious use. Others are very efficient for their intended use but very plain. Most knives fall somewhere in between. Maybe we need a new category - functional art perhaps?

Whether the knife ends up as a user or a queen is up to the owner

BTW this same argument can apply to furniture, cars, pottery, guns....... anything that has been uplifted from its basic function to something that now has aesthetic appeal.

I don't know about "under priced" but I definitely view knives as art. That's why I love carrying 3 or 4 with me most days--portable art--and useable too.

I use everything I have, just some knives a lot less with the exception of my fixed blade hunting knives. My hunting knives get used for hunting purposes only and due to our funds and not having my own hunting land that is on hold for a while. This knife has only been used once and that was to breast out my first turkey.

I started to think that some well crafted and to me beautiful knives were under priced when people I know would exclaim “You paid $500 for a knife!" Often these same people thought nothing of paying a lot more for some thing they called "art". Why is it ok to spend thousands extra for other things because of there artistic value but not so much knives. This philosophical point of view also helps me to justify spending $500 on my next knife to my wife!
