Knives at church - revisited

I've read threads on opinions of carrying your blades in church - thought I'd share my experience this morning.

As I walked in the doors this morning with my 3 girls one of the elders snagged me and said they needed some help unloading the new church sign off of a trailer. So after about 6 of us unloaded it the pastor was looking at the key plastic strapped to the crate. He says, "Anyone got a knife on them?" I pulled out my Case Muskrat - which granted is pretty old-timer friendly. Anyhoo - was cool for the pastor to be asking for a blade. Of course if he'd had his own to do the job that would have been even cooler... :D

This morning while I was preaching, I had my charge in a small black nylon sheath, and my mayo 172 clipped inside my right pocket. I even had the 172 out so that my wife could cut off a loose thread.

Of course I preach in a farming community. I have not yet worn my camo to church yet, but my wife has worn her camo boots. :)

;) thats cool.. my pastor has one cliped in his front pocket as well at all times

I was raised in rural communities. When I was growing up my pocket knife always came in handy for crafts at Sunday school .

I see no problem with wearing knives to Church. Though I wouldnt take a CRKT m-16, having a dress knife is perfectly fine. I wore my Baby Boa to church today.

[Luke 22:36] Then said He unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

If Jesus said it, I believe it.
I would think that this injunction could generally apply to personal self-defense weapons. And as long as one has no evil intentions then carrying a knife discreetly in church would not violate biblical teachings.

Government laws however may vary widely according to local and state ordinances. (Apparently the mythical "separation of church and state", as misguided liberals so fondly like to quote, only applies one way - the state can interfere with the church, but not vice-versa.)

My pastor thinks it looks cool ..not like im brandishing it though in the middle of a sermon.. although I have this urge too ,.. lol that dang flipper is so addictive..

I like the now-repealed Massachusetts law requiring all men to bring guns to Church on Sunday.

I reckon my grandfathers, both of whom were ministers (one Methodist, the other Presbyterian) would not known what to think of this discussion.

When I was living in MA, I used to carry my Star PD to services (I had a CCW). Never worried about the knife issue in MA. Still don't now that I'm in CA.

I now carry (legally) a SIG P220, OC and a Microtech UTX70. Thankfully, I never had to draw my .45 during a Session meeting when I was a Presbyterian Elder, since everything was always done "decently and in order." (If you were raised Presbyterian and served as a Deacon or Elder, you'll understand what I'm talking about).

I usually carry my Gerber Silver Knight or Buck Knight or Case amber mini copperlock in my back pocket, and my Kershaw Splinter quince wood or Benchmade Apparition clipped to my right front pants pocket.

That's when I actually do go to church.

I always carry something with a blade all of the time when I am dressed. So, I am obviously carrying something at Quaker Meetings. When I am noit at my own Monthly Meeting, the Meeting that I regularly attend and in which I am a member and where they know me, I tend towards something that doesn't look too terribly tactical. One of my favorites for that is my BenchMade Switchback with its blue scvales and its two very handy blades. If I must go into DC for a Meeting, I take my distressed bone Spyderco Kiwi or my BenchMade 770 Gentleman's Pocketknife. When I am going to my home Meeting, I tend to carry my Spydie StarMate or, lately, my new MicroTech LCC.

I was once at a Meerting where there was a Potluck supper and they had a gorgeous country ham. They had sliced it, but put out no knives to cut up the slices into eating sized hunks. I pulled out what I was carrying, a Stainless Steel Spydie Police and set to work cutting up my slice of ham. I must say that I got some odd looks :) , but then others asked to borrow the knife and I lent it to them with the caveat that it was very, very sharp, so that they needed to exercise care in using it.

Every sunday I bring a couple knives to church. I carry a SOG flash II in my pocket and a SOG powerlock on my belt. Most of the time I don't need to take them out, but every once in a while I do use them. Generaly speaking nobody even notices, but when someone does its useually the resident hillbilly.:D

I really don't see where having a knife in church is different from anywhere else. Keep it in your pocket and take it out if you need to use it. if you do that, everything should be fine.
