Hey guys, so im going off to college in september and my school has a rule that says the only kinds of knives you can have are for cooking. I still want to bring knives with me of course so i was thinking about bringing an old hickory butcher knife just incase i need a fixed blade and then just bringing a cheap cold steel folder or a SAK and never using it unless i really need it. What do you guys think of this

I brought most of my collection with me and never had a single problem. A couple of the RA's I met were cool with them, as were alot of fellow students. I regularly used them and never had a single problem. My school was located in rural Illinois (ISU), so your situation might be different. Don't let the sheeple force you into the darkness. I upset people when cutting up food with an Opinel, but they never did anything. Sometimes the best way to achieve change is to openly excessive your rights and accept the consequences. Buy something non-threatening like a Opinel or a Stockman and use it openly.

I had an awful RA my freshman year who threatened to pursue judicial action simply for having a lighter. Still, I carried a knife every day, and it's never been an issue. Just don't be dumb about it.

I just graduated college, and as a knife enthusiast, I wouldn't recommend openly carrying to and from class if your school isn't okay with that - it isn't worth getting expelled and losing the insane amount of tuition you pay just so you can have a knife with you. My school had a "zero tolerance" policy about weapons on campus, so I kicked myself the few times I accidentally kept one of my knives on me. As to having your collection with you in your room, just be smart about it. Don't leave it in plain view for everyone (including your RA) and you'll be fine. When you're going off campus to do stuff, then you can go back to throwing one in your pocket.

Just be aware that if you choose to buck the system and openly disobey their rules, that they have every right to remove you from campus at their discretion.

It's nice to have a folder to open up an MRE. Now it would be up to the school if preparing an MRE is considered cooking.

Their house, their rules, stupid as they might be. I'd take an SAK maybe or some traditional knife, those might not count as "weapons"

The only official policy my school had was a prohibition on +3 inch knives in the dorms, it was not clear whether this applied to the rest of the campus.

Yeah.. this might be the ideal time to develop some appreciation for the traditional side of the knife world. A nice Stockman or Trapper or Canoe could slip by under their radar where even a Delica or mini-Grip or Leek would get ya busted. 'Course, I could be wrong about all this. Last time I cared about college rules was 1974 and my Buck 110/112 and 48" recurve bow with a quiver of arrows was a common sight on campus. Nobody paid any attention in those days.

A discreetly carried SAK, Opinel, multitool should probably be OK. As far as a fixed blade, like members are saying...just be smart....don't go waving the thing around in the dorm halls or wearing it on your belt to class and you should be ok.

Thanks guys, ill probly go for a less threatening looking folder and a old hickory, technically its for cooking so i can just mod it and bring a sheath.

Get a Leatherman Juice. It has a blade, bottle opener, and a corkscrew. All the college essentials :D

On the topic of "rules", I have gotten away with all the zero-tolerance weapon policies both on campus and at work by carrying a Leatherman Skeletool. For some reason, people don't freak out as much when there's a pair of pliers glued to my knife.

They do specificly say to bring a toolkit lol

I'm going to U of I this fall and am planning to being most of my collection. My roommate is cool with it and it's in a part of Illinois where hunting is huge. I believe their only restriction is larger than 3 inches.

I would like to see the actual wording of the rule. If you could copy/paste it here, that'd be helpful.

Once the wording is established, the letter of the law can be obeyed. Plus, it'll give you some armor against RA's and other staff that may not fully understand the rules.

The easiest way to foot the rules, is to know them better than everyone else :)
