Knives at Disney World Update

How's it feel knowing you spent $115 dollars to walk in the gate each day? Best advice aside from not bringing a knife to Disney...bring a person in a wheelchair...no, I'm not kidding.
Can confirm.

A good friend of mine uses a wheelchair, and just about every theme park gives her max VIP treatment.

I won't lie... I don't really want to go to theme parks without her.

Im still unsure about bringing a knife only because you went to disneyworld and I go mainly to DisneyLand
Ya same company, but the security/management rules slightly vary at each park
Plus its in PC Cali so they have a great fear of tiny little blades lol
I have had a tiny sak taken away at the gates before so I prefer not to test my luck again haha

Actually heard a stat the other day that over 50% of people in Wheel Chairs at Disney are not handicapped at all!

Probably true and I have heard they are changing their policies on wheelchair guests due to abuse. A few have ruined for those who actually deserve special treatment.

Anyway, don't even try to bring a knife to Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure in Orlando. Every guest goes through a metal detector and bags are searched. They also have an x-ray machine, but I haven't figured out the criteria they use for that yet. Now I am not saying you will get caught every time, but they are much more strict than Disney. I actually talked to a security guard who I saw with a very small SAK style knife that she had found on a guest. They informed me that you can either take it back to your car if they find it or give it to them for disposal. I would never leave one for their disposal, but its a damn long walk back to the car. Just a friendly warning for anyone planning a visit.

"With all of this said, Hollywood Studios was not so cool about it. They let me in but made it very clear the knife needed to go in my bag and not be seen the entire day. They apparently do not have the same understanding as Magic Kingdom. I have also been told that Disneyland has an absolute no knife policy so this does not carry over to there as well."

Welcome to California. I can walk into the Capital building in Atlanta but not Disneyland.

Yeah Disneyland in the PRK ain't so knife friendly. :grumpy:

An excerpt from Disneyland's Permitted Items Park Rules:
•Sporting goods or equipment (e.g., baseball bats, helmets, hockey sticks, golf clubs, bows and arrows, camping equipment, chairs, stools, tables and Frisbees)
•Weapons of any kind or object that appear to be weapons (toy guns, toy blasters, squirt guns, etc.)
•Self-defense equipment (e.g., pepper spray, mace, stun guns)
•Restraining devices (e.g., handcuffs, zip ties) or any suspicious items (e.g., box cutters, razor blades, duct tape, wire)
•Items that may be disruptive (e.g. laser pointers, slingshots, stink bombs, air horns)
•Cremated remains (e.g., urns, vases, boxes) <--- I thought this was particularly dangerous! :D
•Miscellaneous other items (tools, fire extinguishers, musical instruments, megaphones, pots and pans)

Last time I went was in 2011 and I took a ZT0350 no metal detectors and no hassles... And now even my SAK Compact is verboten... Sigh.

I just went to Disney World in February and because I flew down I decided to leave all sharp objects at home. I did consider bringing a SAK classic but played it safe and I didn't look into the park's rules and assumed the worst. There were a few times a knife, even a small one, would have made life much easier but I manage to do without. I was randomly stopped a few times entering the park so I most likely made my life easier by not bringing a knife. I think it was on the Big Thunder Mountain ride I noticed someone in line near me with a Cryo in his pocket.

I bought my kids plastic swords at Pirates of the Caribbean with ~two-foot blades and those weren't a problem. When I went there as a kid in the 80s I remember they sold these great wood and metal pirate guns that I was looking forward to buying for my kids but they don't sell them anymore. At Hollywood Studios we made CUSTOM light sabers!

I have heard Disneyland is a popular place to spread people's ashes. There was one ride that people like to dump ashes in the most, I think it was small world but I can't remember exactly. I will have to look it up again. There was something about filters getting clogged up with ashes.

I went in January of this year, I left my knife at the hotel because I didn't want to hear about from the wife who repeatedly told me no knives at Disney. I carried my Streamlite microstream where my knife would go that way I didn't feel naked.

I was there in 2012 with my ZT350. I recall security going through bags but nothing else.

Kennedy Space Center was different. Metal detectors and all. Funny thing, after showing security the ZT, i told him id keep it in my pocket. He was cool with it. Sure, in the post 9/11 era I got it but we gotta do what we do.

My daughters friends would go up to security and tell them they had anxiety about standing in long lines, front of the line privileges for them and their whole party. Just a little secret for all my BF friends, if you are so inclined.

And at $100 a ticket, maybe more, you won't see me there anytime soon.

The look on my baby girls face at any number of times (she was 4 for her first visit) made it very worth the money. I'd have paid twice that for her to experience that magic in her eyes.

Oh man, for a child, I'd pay three times the amount too.
My wife and I are still trying but it doesn't look to great (in our 40's).

We may adopt then you bet we'll go. I meant me and my wife only.

Been to Disney's California Adventure, Universal Studios, and Legoland in California within the last year, and none had metal detectors. Bag checks at both, though. I took only a SAK Classic both times, because I figured I wouldn't need anything more. The one time it came it handy was to open up a Ring Pop, and that was really about it. The Disney and Universal trips were both prior to the San Bernardino shootings, and I'd read a story on CNN mentioning that both locations were installing metal detectors to increase security, although I can't really confirm either.

Edit to add that one of the new things that I've been carrying is a pair of slip and snip scissors. They're like six bucks a pair, light, and have rounded handles, so they're nice and comfy in the pocket. I suppose if I need a cutting implement in a more restrictive location, I'll use those.

Took mine when small a couple of times.....they were 4 & 6 the first time and they STILL remember it at 23 & 25!!
It is a TOTAL PITA waiting on those lines in that heat......but it is worth every penny and back ache....yes back ache!! One always had to be on dad's shoulders while waiting in line!!
Great memories!
Joe

I've spent a lot of time and money at the Mouse in Orlando. Living in Florida means that every friend/relative expects that we will accompany them for a day or two of fun. I try to stay away now, as I have spent more than enough on Disney. The last time I went to the "parks," several yrs ago, I took my .38 Smith Airweight and CRK large Sebenza with me. Nobody ever checked or asked. Those days are over, though, as they would certainly tell me to take my gun back to the car.
Darned terrorists seem to ruin it for everybody. Glad to hear that they will allow a 3" blade, however. Thanks for asking...just in case I ever get back there.

You are not kidding. The joy of this child when she met her favorite princess was worth every penny. I could post a few hundred more but will keep it at this one.

You are correct. Its a Small World and also Space Mountain i believe. Personally i dont want my ashes floating around in a dirty amusement park ride, but thats just me

For me this post 9/11 world is no longer much fun , for most of my 50 years I carried a pocket knife everywhere I gone with no concerns, It a Royal Pain to worry about this crap . I had to surrender my Camco Camp Knife to security but I got it back when so Fiesta Texas is off my return list too. Never had an issue at Sea World.
